William Hoyt Fletcher was born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, USA - much to his regret. He always said that his mother made a trip to Pennsylvania to visit family and so he was born there instead of Virginia.
Bill came to Alabama on a surveying job with his best friend, They both met Southern belles, stayed, and married them. It wasn't until I started researching this lineage that the family discovered that his father had fought on the wrong side during the War Between the States.
He was an unassuming man - kind - and very devoted to his wife. He was a great grandfather. Ethel was an Episcopalian and the two of them were very influential in supporting the church in Bay Minette.
Bill and Ethel were playing Canasta with an old friend, Mrs. Kilmer, one cold night in January 1961. Ethel drove Mrs. Kilmer home with Bill in the back seat. They crossed an unguarded railway crossing and didn't see the train coming. The windows were rolled up so they didn't hear the engineer blowing the horn. It was an unfortunate accident. They were buried the next day - the only delay was waiting for their eldest grandchild to arrive from college.
William Hoyt Fletcher was buried along side his wife in Bay Minette Cemetery in Bay Minette, Alabama, USA. Burial information and pictures can be found at FindAGrave.com, Memorial # 14739762.
