Biography

This biography is based on the article by Robert S. Wakefield, "The Search for Descendants of Moses Fletcher." New England Historical and Genealogical Register Vol 128. pp 161-169. (1974) Link at AmericanAncestors ($) with supplemental citations from the English and Dutch records.

Prescylla Fletcher, daughter of Moses and Mary (Evans) Fletcher, was baptized on March 24, 1599/1600.[1][2]

She married (1) in Leiden on April 4, 1626, Thomas Coit as his second wife.[1] "4 April 1626. Tomas Koet from England, widower of Elizabeth Beer, accompanied by Willem de Koninck Married Brissilya Philppis from Sandwich, accompanied by Josephine Jones, her acquaintance. It has been decided that Philippis was a slip of the pen for Fletcher.[3][4]

She married (2) on June 1, 1637, Help or Solomon Terry.[1] Betrothal 9 May 1637. "Help Tary "Help Tary, bunting weaver, bachelor, dwelling in the Corte Santstraat, accompanied with Jan Moyses, hes acquaintance dwellin on Oude Chingel with Presilla Fletjer, widow of Thomas Coet, dwelling in Corte Santstraat, accompanied by Lijsbeth Michielsdr, dwelling on Oude Voldersgracht. Marriage: 1 Jun 1637.[5]

In the archives of the Orphans court, register of guardianships, 24 Jul 1652, "William Brey and Steven Buttervelt, friends, requested and have been appointed guardians to Dorothea, 23 years old, daughter of Thomas Koed, deceased, and to Maria, about 15 years old, child of Salomon Terry deceased, both procreated by Priscilla Pletjer." A guardianship was also found for Frans and Josiana Vermout children of Jan Jans Vermout by Sara Jans.

She married (3) Jan Janzoon Vermout. "Jan Jansz Vermout, widower of Sara Jans, dwelling in Loyerstraat (Tanner Street), accompanied by Harck Pietersz van Rijn, his acquaintance, dwelling there too, with Precillia Fletjer, widow of Salomon Terry, dwelling near the Crane, accompanied by Lijsbeth Fletjer her sister dwellin in Sacksteech (a blind alley) behind the Three Hearts brewery." They married 4 Aug 1652.[6]

"Chrissillya" Terry witnessed the notice of the marriage of her daughter Dorothy Koet 30 April 1657.

Children from marriage to Thomas Coit/Koet all were baptized Feb 1634[7] in the Dutch reformed church in the Hooglandse or St. Pancras.[3]

"Jan Thomasz, bachelor from Leiden, clothworker, living at St. Michielsgracht accompanied by Jan Mosesz(oon), his uncle, living at Papengracht with Maartgen Jacobs daughter, spinster from Leiden, living at Groeneveststeeg accompanied by Emmeraentia Fransen, her aunt, living at Groenveststeeg." They married in Warmond, a village near Leiden, 10 April 1650. Children:
    • Marijtje, baptised 4 Sep 1652, godpaents Emmerentia Frans, Dorothea Thomas, Philip Jansz, Jan Mout.
    • Jacob, bpt 16 Aug 1654, godparents Maartje Jans and Dirkje
    • Abraham bpt 13 Feb 1656, godparents Jan Moses, Mary Terry , Janneje Goverts van Klyeynenburg.
    • Neeltje, bpt 15 April 1657, godparents Ariaantje Hoemans and Cijntje (Josijntje) Sacharias
    • Neeltje Koedt, Baptism, 09 Mar 1659 Godparents Michiel Verschoren, Lijsbeth Mosis
    • Abraham bpt 20 Feb 1661, godparents Marijtje Verschoten and Sijntje Nyes.
    • Ariaantje, bpt. 7 Oct 1663, godparents Emmerentia Frans, Denys and Dorothea Koet.
    • Johannes, bpt 1 Nov 1665, godparents Jan Barentsz (Van Outhuyzen) and Emmerentia Frans
    • Francois, bpt 19 Sep 1669, godparents Wouter Gerritsz and Levijntje Einhout.
  • Dirrick Koet ca 1632. Dirk Koet married in 1647. The notice: Dirk Thomasz (oon), painter, bachelor from Leiden, living at Vrouwencamp, accompanied by Jan Moyses "Strijker" (Dresser of woven material), his uncle at Oude Singel with Stijntje (Christine) Eduards, spinster from Leiden, living at Uiterstegracht accompanied by Elsgen Alberts her aunt also living at Uiterstegracht. They married 22 April in St. Peter's church. Baptisms for two children were located under father Dirk Thomas (Zoon)
    • Moses bpt. 11 Feb 1648, godparents Dorothea Thomas and Janneken Willems.
    • Neeltje, bpt 11 Oct 1653, godparents Govert Jansen and Judith Minne.
  • Dorothea Koet ca 1633, married in 1657. The notice: 30 April 1657 "Jan Barentsz bachelor from Haarlem, apronmaker, living at Uiterstegracht, accompanied by Barent Barentsz, his father, living there too with Dorethea Thoms, spinster from Leiden, living near the Crane, accompanied by Chrissillya (!) Terry, her mother, living at Oude Vest." She was living 9 May 1697. (she and her husband, Jan Barents, were godparents to Thomas Koet, s/o Jan Koet, b. 1665, and Petronella van Swieten. Dorothea and Jan Barents were married 21 May 1657 in St. Peter's Church. They had at least three childen
    • Dorothea bpt 17 Mar 1658, godparents Barent Barents, Sara Barents and Maria Salomons
    • Johannes son of Jan Barentszoon Holthuys, bpt 25 Oct 1665, godparents Jan Koes (!) and Maria Jacobs daughter.
    • Elisabeth, d/o of Jan Barentszoon Holthuys bpt 10 Jan 1668, godparents Barent Barentsz and Josijntje Jans daughter and Sara Barents daughter.
