Biography

Date is from parish Christening at Milton-next-Sittingbourne, Kent, England

Samuel Fletcher, was involved in the Melanesian Mission at Kohimarama with Bishop John Coleridge Patteson from about 1850. He moved to Onehunga about 1870, with his wife Mary. Both are buried at St Peter's Church, in Onehunga

They had no children.

What the FLETCHER family will find interesting. Samuel is a first cousin to Isaac Samuel Fletcher (husband of Frances Bateman). This couple were staunchly involved at St Peter's Church, and also both buried in the graveyard.

In fifty years of research I never heard anyone mention this cousin - maybe it was so normal that the information was lost. However the Isaac Fletcher descendants were aware of relative (female) living in New Zealand. I can understand how the Samuel Fletchers may have been mixed up.

We now know that Samuel Fletcher had encouraged/supported his nephew William Thomas Fletcher to live in New Zealand.

Did he influence others?
