Biography

Sophia Flood (1836- )

Born about 1836, Ireland.

Sophia Flood, 18, Irish, Servant, sailed from Waterford, Ireland, bound for the United States of America, aboard the Lawrence Forristal, arriving New York, NY, on 20 May 1835. No other names appear next to her. [1]

She married, THOMAS BURTCHAELL (1833-1900), 1 Nov 1856, at St Paul's Church, Newark, New Jersey; Rev H Goodier[?][2][3]

Children:

  1. Sarah Catherine Burtchaell (1858-1924); there may have been a previous Sarah who died early.

  3. Frances Charlotte Burtchell (1861- ), m William Dennington Henson

Thomas and Sophia recorded several times as Communicants at St. Paul's (Episcopal) Church, Newark.

1870 US Federal Census, Newark (Ward 7), New Jersey: Thomas Burchael (38), born Ireland, occ "Carrier", personal estate $200. Sophia Burchael (30), b Ireland, Keeping House. Sarah C Burtchael (12), born New Jersey, at school; William E Burtchael (10), born NJ, at school; Francis C Burtchael (8), dau, born NJ, at school; Sophia Burtchael (6), born NJ, at school; Thomas A Burtchael (4), born NJ, at school; David J Burtchael (2), born NJ

Died: 5 Aug 1871, Newark, New Jersey. Cause: pericarditis [record in Book AS, p. 224]. Her death followed that of her infant, Frederick, by only a few weeks. Despite the dates given, she is otherwise reported as being 38 years old.[5]

Buried: 9 Aug 1871, Woodland Cemetery, Essex, New Jersey.[6] "Find a Grave" gives DOB as 7 Aug 1871.[7]

[Following her death, Thomas remarried 1 April 1875, Newark, NJ, to Charlotte Flood (1851- ) They had a daughter, Alice, who only lived six months. It is not known if there is any connection between the Floods. Father Jim in his work (p 49), makes no comment, not even whether any unsuccessful attempt was made.]

-- Side note: some Floods originally had the name Tully.
