John Floyd

  • NOTE: THERE IS NO PROOF that John Floyd is the son or grandson of Nathaniel Floyd. This has been copied/pasted from some geni site with no accompanied proof to back it up. Please document the relationship. (see Note 2)
  • Birth: about 1640, probably Wales (needs documented proof of place/date)
  • Marriage: about 1673-74 to Mary ____ (Berry.) See NOTE1
  • Death: between WFT 2 April 1687 - Probate 28 July 1687, Northampton Co, Colony of VA
  • The known children of John Floyd and Mary ____ (possibly Berry):
John Floyd c 1674/75 - bef 14 Nov 1738 (m. Ann Wilkins)
Charles Floyd c 1676 - bef 17 Feb 1718/19 (m. Elizabeth Fisher)
Berry Floyd c 1678 - bef 11 Dec 1750 (m. ______ , & their dau m. John Savage)
Matthew Floyd (Sr) c 1680 - bef 9 Jun 1752 (m. Sarah Green)
Sarah Floyd1 b. c 1682 (may have m. Argol Wilkins - see NOTE2)
Esther Floyd1 b. c 1684 (m. unk, but possibly Rogers or Bibby/Bibbe - see Miles FIles)
The above children are named in John Floyd's 1687 WFT, and listed in that order
  • NOTE1: There is no documented proof that John's wife Mary (as named only Mary in his WFT) is Mary BERRY. This conclusion comes from the fact that one of their sons was named Berry Floyd and it has been "assumed" to be her last name for years. Keep looking for documented proof of Mary's maiden name! As it is just a guess or supposition, it should be presented in parenthesis as (Berry.)
  • NOTE2: There is also NO PROOF that John Floyd is related in any way (particularly as a son) to Nathaniel Floyd of Jamestowne. That is true of Walter Floyd also. These Welch Floyds/LLoyds "may" be related, but there is no extant proof so far....keep looking!!
  • NOTE3: Sarah Floyd "may" have married Argol Wilkins who died in 1725. He married three times and had the following children with wife #2: John, Mary, Watkins, Berry and 'daughter' Wilkins. He married first, Elizabeth ____ about 1695 and had a daughter Elizabeth. His middle wife's name is unknown but the children named above are apparently hers and some are familiar Floyd names. They were married about 1700 and she was deceased by 1720 when he married Mary Warren. The Wilkins line should be studied carefully to prove or disprove this idea. A search of the Northampton records between 1700-1719 or so, might show Argol Wilkins and "wife Sarah" witnessing a document or appearing in court together.
  • Timeline of some events for John Floyd: (see the "Miles Files" link below for more.)
30 July 1660 - earliest known record of John Floyd of Northampton Co, Colony of Virginia. Named as a headright at Northampton on a land certificate for 1000 acres granted to John Wilcocks for the transportation of 20 persons. The actual court document can be viewed below. No other Floyds were in this particular immigrant group, but there were two Marys: Mary Avery and Mary Barber. It appears (note the word "appears" is NOT proof) that John was young and unmarried at the time of his arrival.
  • (Over time, I will find each of these entries in the actual court records and post the links for viewing the original record )
1 May 1668 - John Floyd bought 100 acres of land in Northampton Co, VA, tract N37.
1669 - John Floyd was appointed constable of Northampton County by the county court.
Abt 1674 John Floyd married Mary (possibly Berry) at Northampton Co, VA. (So far, there is no record of this marriage or proof of the name Berry)

Miles Files - Eastern Shore Public Library - Accomac, VA

John Floyd was brought to Virginia by a certificate that was granted to a Mr. John Wilcocks on 30 Jul 1660 for the transportation of 20 persons. He was named as a "headright" meaning he was being transported with the condition he must develop some land. There were no other people named Floyd on the list. [1] He was probably a single man at this time. By August 1666, John Floyd was on the "List of Tithables" in Northampton County. He had probably fulfilled his duties as "headright." Possibly he had married by this time. Two years later in 1668, John Floyd was granted land in Northampton County, Virginia. In 1669 John Floyd was appointed constable of Northampton County by the county court.  In 1681 John Floyd, Edmund Bibbe, Thomas Hunt, and George Clarke entered into a partnership to obtain a grant of 2,200 acres on Hogg Island. [2]

John Floyd had become a wealthy land owner. He and his wife had at least six children. In his will written on 2 Apr 1687 he left his oldest son John, his "mansion where I now dwell." [3] His will was probated two months later on 28 Jul 1687. His wife Mary and son John were co-executors. John was probably "of age." Some of the other children were obviously underage. The will stipulated that the sons would be of age "at the age of eighteen if their mother remarried and at the age of one and twenty if she doth not marry." And the daughters would be of age at the age of sixteen. Esther was named specifically as being under age. When the land was divided in 1687 after the death of John Floyd, his share of Hogg Island was given to Mary "Lloyd" on behalf of Charles, Berry and Matthew "Lloyd," indicating these children were also underage in 1687.

CHILDREN

  • john Floyd b. Abt. 1667 (oldest son joint executor of father's estate in 1687)
  • Charles Floyd b. Abt. 1669
  • Sarah Floyd b. Abt. 1670 (presumably older than her sister Hester)
  • Hester (Esther) Floyd b. Abt. 1671 (under 16 when will written in 1687)
  • Berry Floyd b. Abt. 1673
  • Matthew Floyd b. Abt. 1680 (Charles, Berry and Matthew were not old enough in 1678 to obtain land on Hogg Island in their own right, but instead in the right of their mother, Mary)

  2. John Floyd I patented land in 1681 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year that a patent for 2,200 acres was granted to Thomas Hunt, John Floyd, Edmund Bibby and George Clarke. In 1687 a new patent was granted to the same partners for a total of 3,350 acres called Hogg Island alias Shooting Beach. The next year the island was formally divided as follows: the south end to Mary "Lloyd" on behalf of Charles, Berry and Matthew "Lloyd," the deed for which definitely says "Lloyd," but it was later disposed of by Floyd; to Thomas Hunt, the land north of the Floyds; the part north of him to Elizabeth Clarke on behalf of George and William Clarke; and the north end to Bibby. https://www.geni.com/people/John-Floyd-of-Northampton-County/6000000001699247411

Floyd-4667 and Floyd-1442 appear to represent the same person because: These two men are the same man and should be merged.

The profile for John Floyd already exists. This profile needs to be merged into it. (Hester/Ester also)

They probably are the same man.....but there is no extant proof that Nathaniel Floyd is in any way related to this John Floyd. If there is a merge, there should be a disconnect to Nathaniel until there is proof of some (or any) connection. This Nathaniel business is much wishful thinking and bad genealogy, mostly off Ancestry. I think Liz Shiflett could weigh in on this. She's pretty savvy with Jamestown lines. This John Floyd is the father of Charles who married Elizabeth Fisher. John Fisher is a gateway line into Magna Carta. (Elizabeth's Great Grand is John Fisher). I ascend and descend through Charles and Elizabeth Floyd and although I would love to find John related to Nathaniel (more likely a grandfather rather than father) I've looked at this for years.....spent many an hours at the Eastern Shore Library. Dorman's AP&P goes no further and the Clagett report offers nothing either. I will leave a note for Liz to see what she thinks.

Floyd-1442 and Floyd-3138 appear to represent the same person because: appears to be same person, same spouse.

There is no proof whatever (so far anyway) that John Floyd d. 1687 Northampton is the son of (or otherwise related) to Nathaniel Floyd. There is a new book out on this line which I saw in 2018 at the Eastern Shore Library. It has the photograph (of a well-known oil painting by Annie Blackshear) of Capt Charles Floyd of SC/GA wrongly assigned to some other Rev War soldier named Charles Floyd. Disappointing error, so be careful.
