Research Notes

On the first page of the probate records for Jesse Floyd, a Noel Floyd is mentioned who said he is familiar with the property in question and that it would be his suggestion to the involved parties if the land was sold and not divided. It does not mention any relationship between Jesse and Noel.

The second page is a petition by David Floyd (noted as the son of Jesse Floyd). Jesse Floyd's land is described as being in Sumter District, in lower Salem on Horse Branch waters of the Black River. The land is bounded by lands of the estate of Joshua Floyd, the estate of Philip Coker, John Lavender, Brian Howell, and John Wilson. The land is made up of 742 acres and was originally granted to Jesse Floyd and (i am unsure of what is written but seems to start with B) Floyd. Could this be Baxter Floyd?

Listed as heirs are : Morris Floyd, Philip Floyd, Jesse Floyd, Sarah A Floyd, Rutha Floyd, Laney Floyd and the petitioner David Floyd. David Floyd's petition was dated 16 Jan 1851. He was petitioning for an order of sale.

On the next page there is a David N Gamble mentioned as guardian.

The last couple of pages deal with the sale of the land. Harvey Skinner, Sheriff of Sumter District states that he put the land up for sale in April 1851 and that the land was sold on 5 May 1851 for 62 cents an acre. It lists the purchaser as having the last name Floyd but can't make out first name. It looks to me, though, that the purchaser was David Floyd.

I believe Philip C Floyd and Morris H Floyd were sons of Jesse by a previous marriage having been born in 1819 and 1817 respectively.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jesse by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jesse:

Ron, I added a research notes section to organize information. It always helps me figure out what facts are known. Let me know if you see any other info in the documents that might help.

Hi Ron, I just wrote a blog piece about the wife of a Morris H. Floyd(1817-?) who originally lived in Sumter and then was living in Douglas, Clarendon County. I found probate records in Sumter for Jesse Floyd on which Morris is listed as an heir but it does not give his relationship to Jesse (I was assuming son). However, he would have been born before Jesse's marriage to Penelope. Also listed in the probate record are David, Jesse, Laney, Rutha, Philip, and Sarah A. I see Jesse and Laney listed as children on here and they were definitely born after the marriage. Do you think the others are children by another marriage? I can post the probate records on this profile if you would like me to.
