Biography

"Polly Floyd, Daughter of Nicholas, and Catharine Floyd, was born in Chester on the twenty fourth day of June, One thousand, Eight hundred and Eleven. Recorded Jany. 12th, 1815. Jno. E. Pence. Town Clerk."^[1]

Mary Floyd married Benjamin Lantz, supposedly on 4 July 1834 in Chester or Lunenburg, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, but the source for this specific date is unknown.

1871 Mary and Benjamin Lantz resided in New Ross, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Her religious preference was Baptist as was Benjamins. ^[2]

1881 Mary and her husband Benjamin Lantz resided in New Ross, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The Census states her Nationality is German as is her husbands, and her religion is still Baptist. ^[3]

Mary died in 1885, supposedly on 30 March, but the only known source for this specific date is Find a Grave, and although there's a photo of the grave marker, it contains only the years of birth and death, not the specific dates. Mary is buried in the United Baptist Cemetery, New Ross, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, Canada.^[4]

Notes

The only known source for the purported middle name "Eliza" is Find a Grave, and even her grave maker lists her as "Mary F." with the "F" probably standing for "Floyd." All other sources list her name as Mary or Polly. It appears she has been confused with an Eliza/Elizabeth/Louisa Lantz, who also married a man named Benjamin Lantz. This Benjamin was born on 5 Nov 1807, the son of Philipp and Eliz. Lantz, and was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church, Lunenburg,^[5] whereas Mary's husband was the son of Peter and Hannah Lantz and was baptized in the St Stephen's Anglican Church, Chester.

Eliza/Elizabeth Lantz was listed as Louisa Vienot on the marriage record with Benjamin Lantz,^[6] which accords with the 1871 and 1881 Canada Censuses, which list her nationality as French.^[7]

As noted above, in 1881 Mary and Benjamin Lantz were living in New Ross, Lunenburg; Eliza and Benjamin Lantz were living in Chester, Lunenburg, at that time, so clearly they were two different couples. Living with Eliza and Benjamin were George Lantz, age 41, and Mary J. Lantz, age 39, so some of the children attached to Mary and Benjamin may not be theirs.

Eliza and Benjamin Lantz were still living in Chester in 1891, according to the Canada Census,^[8] but by that time, Mary Lantz had died, and her Benjamin was still living in New Ross.^[9]

Elizabeth Lantz lived until 1909, when she died in Lunenburg County,^[10] whereas Mary Lantz died in 1885.
