Biography

Matthew Benjamin or MB was born in 1829. He was the son of Matthew Floyd and Elizabeth Miles. He passed away in 1908.

He married Martha Ann Dalton in 1848 and moved to Decatur County and then to Gadsden Co, Florida before the outbreak of the Civil War.

In the Quincy census of 1860, he is shown as an Overseer, born in GA with wife Martha and children Elizabeth Delphi 11, Zilla 9, Martha 7, Ben 4, all born in Georgia and then Mary 1 b. Florida.

Census of 1880, Gadsden Co, list M.B. 51 with Martha Ann 50, M.L 18, Jacko 12, Sue Emma 10. Seems other children have left home.

"Florida State Gazetteer & Business Directory 1886-7" lists MB Floyd as Justice of the Peace as well as under Vegetable and Truck Farmers; Cotton and Grain Planters, in Scotland, Florida.

"People of Lawmaking In Florida 1822/1979, #10" lists Matthew Benjamin Floyd as House of Representatives for Gadsden County in 1887.

Matthew married on August 23, 1848, in Dooley Co., GA, Martha Ann Dalton. Matthew B. Floyd and Alexander McIver witnesses together on Bostick Land sale p 147/8 1861, July 6, Gadsden Co., Fla. M. Floyd listed as School Trustee of Thomas Store School 1871-73 in Gadsden County History. In 1880 Trustee of Scott's Store #7 School Florida State Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1886-7 listed Matthew as a Justice of the Peace, cotton and grain planter and Vegetable and Truck farmer.

Represented Gadsden County in the Florida House of Representatives in 1887. Listed in "The People of Lawmaking in Florida 1822/1979, Capitol Years, No. 10." May 29, 1891. Notice in the Times Democrat Newspaper, M. B. Floyd was on the building committee and bought two share at $20 to build a Tobacco Sale and Packing Warehouse, to be located in the town of Quincy.

Buried Salem Cemetery, outside Havana , Florida, site of his family farm.
