Mr. Flynn was born at Riverton, a son of the late Miles and Della Whitecotton Flynn. Thus is noted the passing of a good man, and a r**der in educational endeavor in West Virginia. Charles Edward Flynn, 66, retired principal of Circleville High School, was fatally injured last Wednesday night in a truck accident on the Seneca Caverns road 2.6 miles north of Riverton. Flynn had attended a teachers banquet at Circleville and was on his way to his farm near Riverton when the accident occurred. The wreck was discovered about 5 o'clock Thursday morning by Wright Harper who lives near the scene of the accident. The truck was found lying on its top with Flynn pinned under the cab. When Harper's efforts to free the injured man proved futile, Flynn, who was conscious, told him to get a fence rail and pry the cab off of him. Harper and Estyl Lambert, of Riverton, took Flynn to a clinic at Petersburg where he was given preliminary treatment. He was then removed to a hospital at Marlinton where he died about 10 a.m. Thursday [April 19 1956]. Cpl. F. W. Armstrong, of the Franklin State Police, detachment, said the 1947 model Chevrolet pick-up truck which Flynn was driving left the road near the gate which leads into the Wright Harper farm. The truck broke off a fence post and was found lying on its top about 30 feet inside the field. Cpl. Armstrong said that it appeared that the truck had turned over endwise as only the top of the cab and hood were dented and part of the windshield was knocked out. It was not apparent, however, what had caused the accident. It was estimated that the accident had occurred about 11 o'clock Wednesday night. When found, the cab and one door was lying across Flynn's chest pinning him to the ground. His finger tips were bruised and bloody from trying to dig himself out from under the truck. Hospital attendants said that he had suffered a broken right femur, fractured pelvius [sic], facial cuts and bruises and internal injuries. He was also suffering from shock and exposure. It was believed that his death was partly caused by exposure since he was pinned under the truck throughout the night and the temperature was near freezing. A longtime education official in Pocahontas County, he was superintendent of Pocahontas County schools from 1927 to 1939, and was principal of Circleville High School in Pendleton County from 1943 to 1953. He had retired from teaching in 1953, but he was a candidate for the county board of education in Pocahontas County at the time of his death. He owned farms in both Pendleton and Pocahontas Counties and was active in community affairs in both counties. He was a member of the Ruritan Club at Circleville, president of the North Fork Lime Producing Co-op, Inc. and president of the Arborvale [sic] Community Cemetery Association. He is survived by his wife, Edith; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Sutton and Mrs. Ruth Riley, both of Arbovale; three sisters, Mrs. Frona Williams, of Durbin, Mrs. Clark Wooddell of Bradford, Pa. and Mrs. Sam Thompson of Durbin; two brothers, Luther of Leonardtown, Md., and Otis of Williamsport, Pa.; and his father, Myles Flynn of Bradford, Pa. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Methodist Church at Arbovale by the Rev. Lee Roy Richardson. Interment was in the Arbovale Cemetery. -- Pendleton Times, April 26, 1956
