Biography

James was the fourth child of the seven children of Patrick and Isabella Flynn. He was five years old when his mother died. James remained on his father's homestead until he married at age 27. He was a farmer and and did some highway maintenance and construction work, using his wagon and a team of horses to carry gravel. In 1925, James left the farm and went to work at the new General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan. He was one of their charter employees and remained with them until about 1930 when he was laid off due to the Great Depression of 1929. After 1939, he worked at various jobs of building and road construction. At age 70, he died after a short illness.
