In 1851 John Flynn (age 1) was a lodger at Canal Street in Preston, Lancashire, England along with his father John (29, Ag Laborer) and mother Bridget (22).[2]
In 1861 John Flinn (age 11, Cotton Creeler) lived at Canal Street in Preston with his father John (34, Agricultural Labourer), mother Bridget (36), and two siblings: Patrick (6, Scholar) and Margaret (2), as well as three lodgers: John Coggins (26, Agricultural Labourer), Ann Coggins (27), and Catherine Coggins (6, Scholar).[3]
John's father passed away before 1871.
In 1871 John Flynn (age 21, Cotton Piecer) lived in Preston with his mother Bridget (40, Housekeeper) and three siblings: Patrick (16, Cotton Piecer), Thomas (12, Scholar), and Margt (12, Scholar), as well as relative Patrick Flynn (26, Cotton Weaver) and two lodgers: Margt Woods (25, Cotton Rover) and Mary Ellen Woods (3).[4]
John Flynn married Elizabeth Gallagher in 1877. The marriage was registered in Preston in the third quarter of the year.[5]
In 1881 John Flynn (age 31, Plasterers Laborer) lived at Bedford St in Preston with his wife Elizabeth (24, Drawing Tenter In Cotton Mill), son Thomas (3), daughter Margaret (0), and boarder Catherine Burke (54).[6]

In 1901 John Flynn (age 51, House Plasterer's Labourer) lived in Great Harwood, Lancashire with his wife Eliza (46, Cotton Cardroom Hand) and six children: Thomas (22, House Plasterer's Labourer), Margaret (20, Cotton Cardroom Hand), Joseph (18, Cotton Reacher), Catherine (13, Cotton Reacher), James (11), and George (7).[7]
