"The birth of Mr. Flynn took place in Bainbridge, New York, August 25, 1828, and, as his father, Rufus Flynn, died when our subject was young, he was reared by his maternal grandparents, in Pennsylvania, and early learned some of the hard lessons of life. His father, a native of Dutchess county, New York, was of Irish descent, while his mother, Sylvia Ann (Owens) Flynn, was born in Bainbridge, and was of Welsh extraction. Their eldest son, Milton, like his historic namesake, permanently lost his eyesight and died when he was a young man. He left a widow, formerly a teacher. William, the next son, lived in the east at last accounts. Marcus, who reared several children, and was the proprietor of a flourishing summer resort in the mountains of the Keystone state, died many years ago. Mrs. Sylvia Flynn died in Chicago, on her way to the east, during the dread scourge of the early '50s, from cholera."[3]
