Biography

Mary "Polly" Ann Foil was born 1808 in Georgia the daughter of William Foil and Jane Perkins Foil.

Polly married John Coleman Holmes (b. ca. 1800). They had eight children on the 1850 census for Pike Co. Mississippi. And in 1852 they had a son named Ransom.

John's parents Elisha Warren Holmes and Sally Stovall were from Morgan County, Georgia. They lived previously in Lincoln County where most of their children were born. Later, Elisha and Sarah, "Sally", immigrated to Mississippi with families that included the Stovalls and Foils. Settling on Collins Creek, Pike County, Mississippi, they were the original ancestors of the Holmes family in Pike County. Elisha Holmes was a successful blacksmith. His large family was well respected. His home was located three miles east of the present "Tylertown", now known as the "Jap Holmes Place". Elisha was a member of the Goshen Baptist Church. He was brought before the church in 1806 for using improper language and was expelled for his "indifference".
