Note H171Gracie May Foltz was born Nettie Gertrude Logan. "Official" story is that her father was killed on the Dayton-Ohio Railroad when she was a baby. Her mother's name was Mary Logan and her maternal grandmother was a Mann. She was adopted by Hiram and Emma Foltz about 1881, when Gracie was 3 1/2. The "unofficial" family story is that Hiram Foltz is her real father and that her mother was a servant in his household. Neither story has been proven.
Note N170According to notes from Grace's daughter, Kathleen Webster Cox, Grace was born Nettie Gertrude Logan. Her father was killed on the Dayton Ohio Railroad when she was a baby. Her mother was Mary and her maternal grandmother was a Mann (married name?). Grace was adopted at the age of 3 1/2 by Hiram and Emma Walton Foltz. Exhaustive search has neither confirmed or refuted this information. No adoption records have been found in Vigo County, Indiana. It may have been an informal adoption, since that would have been a common practice at that time. Other family sources contend that Hiram Foltz was actually her father and her mother was a servant in the household.
