Douw was born August 17, 1771 in Albany, New York. He is the son of John Douw Fonda and Elizabeth Knipping Ouderkerk.
He was baptized September 21, 1771 in The Reformed Dutch Church of Albany.
Douw Fonda married Machtel Lansing on September 2, 1788
