Biography

John was born about 1500 in England. He married a Bradley (from Bedham) about 1525 in Dodford, Worcestershire, England. They had a son John born about 1526. In 1529, John Ffownes owned  : • – A pasture and meadow called “Coxhiron”and a pasture and meadow called “Priests Fielde”….30/- • A pasture and meadow adjoining to wit “Tynsall: (undated) • A field called “Hynyngall” (onyngall) with a meadow in the same fields, Grange Croft, Cowegreves, and parcel of wood called Cowegreves…..38/- • Undated Knyghts Grounde, a parcel of land called le Heywardes Fee, lying in Podell, except one parcel of land called le Slyng lying between le Priests fielde….18/6 • A messuage and two adjacent crofts called Walkers….3/-

In 1538, when the monasteries were dissolved by Henry VIII, the site and manor of the Priory of Augustus Canons in Dodford were granted to Sir John Dudley. Andrew Dudley then sold the chief mansion house or messuage at Dodford to John Ffownes in 1539. Thus, John Ffownes became one of the principal land owners at Dodford.

John Ffownes was one of the school governors named in the Marion Charter. The Bromesgrove School records mention John Ffownes and William Ffones. John was mentioned in 1556 as one six of the “more discreet and approved inhabitants of the town who were appointed to look after the Bromesgrove school.”

Research Notes

Merged profile had the following source http://www.fones.org/htmlNE/d0000/g0000025.html#I71, but it is unclear who to follow to find this particular individual since everyone on the page was born ca 1800's and 1900's. Additionally someone had said the source was weak as it had no citations on it. The profile also had the mother as Unknown Telham. A merge should probably be initiated once the proper surname is determined. In the merge I used most information from Fones-56 since it had a better source, a book entitled The Fones Family.

There's no place called Saxony in Devon. Birth place standardised to just Devon. Millard-1402 20:57, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
