Joseph Fones was born 11 May 1699 on Cononicut Island, RI. He was the son of Jeremiah Fones and his first wife Elizabeth. [1]
He served in the Revolutionary War and had the distinction of being the oldest Ensign, so far recorded, responding to an alarm call, July 30, 1778, in his seventy-ninth year. He was created Ensign and served seven days, for which he received sixteen shillings. [2]
Joseph Fones married on 15 May 1725 at Jamestown, RI to Penelope Remington , daughter of Stephen and Penelope Remington. [3]
