Alexander was born about 1425 son to Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo and his wife Agnes daughter to William Fraser of Philorth.
About 1445 Alexander married it is claimed Maria daughter to the Earl of Erol.
Alexander had issue:
His father Sir William was killed at the Battle of Arbroath in January 1445/46. Alexander's succession to Pitsligo was disputed by his brother Malcolm.This was settled by a court comprising Alexander, Earl of Huntly, Alexander, Lord Forbes, Sir Alexander Irvine of Drum, and others, made a Decreet Arbitral at Oulsalmond on 21 May 1446. The finding was that Alexander Forbes was lawful and full heir to all the lands held by his father. They also declared that Malcolm should execute a bond of manrent to his elder brother, for which he was to receive the lands of Meikle Wardis, in the Garioch. [1]
On 18 June, 1455, a Royal charter of the lands of Pitsligo in the earldom of Buchan, and of the lands of Meikle Wardis in the regality of Garioch, united into the barony of Pitsligo, was granted to Alexander Forbes of Kynnaldy, on the resignation of himself and Agnes Fraser his mother, but reserving her liferent of the lands.[2]
An Indenture of friendship, manrent, and maintenance, was agreed in 1467 between William, Lord Forbes, Sir Alexander Forbes of Pitsligo, Alexander Forbes of Tolquhon, Arthur of Forbes, and John of Forbes of Brux, on the one part, and Duncan Macintosh, captain of Clanchattan, Hugh Rose, baron of Kilravock, etc., on the other part. On 6 July, 1469, an agreement between Malcolm, abbot of Arbroath, and Alexander Seyton of Meldrum, as to the marches between the barony of Tarves and the lands of Meldrum, was witnessed by George, lord Gordon, William, lord Forbes, Alexander, lord of Pitsligo, and Alexander Forbes, lord of Tolquhon.— [4] On 10 October 1476, at Edinburgh Alexander was granted a charter of the baronies of Pitsligo and Kynnaldy following on his own resignation. [5]
On 29 April, 1477, Alexander Forbes was served heir to Sir Alexander Forbes of Kynnaldy and Pitsligo, his grandfather, (who died in the month of March, 1477) in the barony of Pitsligo, with the house or tower, then valued at one hundred merks, and forty pounds in time of peace, and held of the King in blench farm. Regarding comment above on Malcolm of Meikle Wardis, he was younger brother to Alexander not son. Malcolm contested in court Alexander's inheritance on death of their father but court said Alexander was son and heir in full of all the lands however decreed that Malcolm enact a Bond of Manrent to his elder brother in exchange for the lands of Meikle Wardis.

Ogilvy of Lintrathan by whom he had two sons (1). Alexander, his heir, and (2). William of Daach, of whom afterwards.

4. One daughter married to John Gordon of Botary.
5. One to Alexander Urquhart, Sheriff of Cromarty.
6. One to Alexander Tulloch of Montcoffer.
7. One to Mowat of Balquholly.

Sir Alexander died in March, 1477, and his eldest son, William, having predeceased him, he was succeeded by his grandson, Alexander III. of Pitsligo. His great-great-great-grandson, Alexander VIII. of Pitsligo, was on 24th June, 1633, created Lord Forbes of Pitsligo in the Peerage of Scotland, with remainder to heirs male of his body or their heirs, whom failing to his heirs male whomsoever of the name of Forbes. Alexander fourth Lord Forbes of Pitsligo was attainted in 1746 by an Act of Parliament, in which he was wrongly described as Lord Pitsligo ; but the House of Lords upheld the attainder. His only son John died without issue in 1781, and in his person the heirs male of the body of Alexander first Lord Forbes of Pitsligo became extinct. 1 A claim to the dignity was prepared by the late Mr. Cosmo Innes on behalf of the heir general of the heir male of the body of the grantee, Sir John Stuart Forbes, eighth baronet of Monymusk, whose great-grandfather, the fifth baronet, was son and heir of John Forbes (son of the fourth baronet) by Mary, daughter of Alexander, third Lord Forbes of Pitsligo. 2 The death of Sir J. S. Forbes in 1866 stopped further proceedings.3
