Biography

From Sir Arthur Forbes of Castle Forbes, 1st Bt., and his wife, Jane(t) Lauder [her second husband], descend the Earls of Granard who were still resident at Castle Forbes, county Longford, in 1858.

Sir Arthur received large grants of land in county Longford and county Leitrim, erected into the manor of Castle Forbes.[1]

In 1622 he was by Letters Patent at Dublin, made a free denizen of Ireland.

He died in a duel at Hamburg.

1628. "Capt. Arthur Forbes of Castle Forbes," in the parish of Clongish, co. Longford, 6th s. of William Forbes, of Corse, by Elizabeth, da. of (—) Strachan of Thornton, settled in Ireland in 1620, and was made a free denizen thereof, 1 April 1622 ; received lands, in the counties of Leitrim and Longford, erected into the manor of Castle Forbes and was created a Baronet [S.],29 Sep., sealed 10 Oct. 1628,(c) with rem. to heirs male whatsoever, and with a grant of 16,000 acres in Nova Scotia, of which he had seisin in Nov. 1628. He was Colonel of a regiment in the service of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden. He married between 12 Feb. 1618 and 1623, Jane, widow of Sir Claud Hamilton of Clonyn, co. Cavan, daughter of Maurice Lauder of Belhaven, Dunbar, Scotland, M.P. Sir Claud died 14 April 1632, being slain in a duel at Hamburg. His widow suffered greatly in the Civil Wars, and was besieged for many months at Castle Forbes till forced to surrender in Aug. 1642.
