William, was 21

when he left home and the tenanted farm at Ballinascarty, Co. Cork, with the rest of the family. They had to travel 30 miles to reach Cork, and like many others they would have loaded their belongings on to a handcart along with the young members of the family, while the older children and their parents walked alongside. On the rocky paths and what passed for roads at that time it would have taken them 2-3 adays. In those days some ships loaded and sailed from Cork rather than the harbor at Cobh.
