Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile, citing unsourced family trees, claimed she was daughter of Philip Robert Fordham and Elizabeth Shotbolt. Lacking solid evidence of this parentage, Florence is being detached from them, and her last name at birth changed to Unknown.

Biography

Florence (Unknown) Hicks was a New Netherland settler.

Florence married first John Carman in abt. 1632. Anderson states that Florence joined the Roxbury Church after her husband. Children were b. Roxbury. Florence married second John Hicks in 1656.

Children with her first husband:

  1. John, b Roxbury 8 Ju 1633; m by 1660 Hannah _____. In his will of 14 Sep 1684 he ordered two of his sons "to take my brother Joshua Carman's estate into their hands and to provide for him, if he wishes."[1]
  2. Abigail, b Roxbury July 1635; m by 1660 Benjamin Coe (this one?)
  3. Caleb, b Roxbury 1 Mar 1639/40; m by 1666 Elizabeth ______
  4. Joshua, b Hempstead 9 Jan 1645/6; alive on 14 Sep 1687, apparently infirm

Florence had no children by Hicks. She died before 1661.

Within Great Migration Begins, Vol 1, A-F there is reference to Calendar of Dutch Manuscripts Vol 9 wherein an abstract of a petition dated 7 April 1661 by John Carman, Caleb Carman and Benjamin Coe, husband of Abigail Carman, praying that John Hicks who married their mother "maybe obliged to render an account of the estate." Fordham-566 and Unknown-398608 are not ready to be merged because: seems this Florence duplicate has been addressed in past and decision that Unknown is not same as Fordham

Fordham-566 and Unknown-398608 appear to represent the same person because: Fordham-566 should be merged into the Unknown-398608

We should now remove Fordham as the surname of Florence. No source has been identified. The source referenced by Matt is a collection of other peoples trees and misc. sources. No actual document is presented and therefore a surname can not be identified. However, as Matt suggest, we should reference in the bio, the Fordham surname as this is a reoccuring suggestion based on the same vague sources.

If her first husband Carman died in 1658 (as his profile has it), how was she marrying Hicks in 1656?

while its not 100 percent proof its currently the best we have in regards to maiden name

I would at least have the Fordham connection left as a not until 100 percent proof maybe however remove the link

Review of Maiden Name, Birth and Death dates and Locations and Parents and Siblings are needed.

Fordham-28 and Fordham-13 appear to represent the same person because: I believe the surname of Florence is in questions but she did apparently marry both John Hicks and John Carmen. More sourcing is needed to clean up the profile and fix vitals.

What is the source for her maiden name and origins. In Anderson's profile of John Carman, he does not provide a maiden name for her.
