Biography

"Johann Adam Farni" married "Elisabeth Louisa Muellerin" on 25 January 1713 in Evangelisch-Reformierte, Bad Duerkheim, Pfalz, Bavaria, now Bad Dürkheim, Bad Dürkheim, Pfalz, Bayern, Deutschland (Germany).[1]

From the Book: "The Descendants of Johann Adam Forney 1557 - 1963 identified as from the family bible of Johann Adam Forney:[2]

"In the year 1721 on the 16th October, I, Johann Adam Forney and wife Louisa with four children arrived at Philadelphia in Penn., having lived at Wachenheim-on-the-Hart (Mountain) in the Palatinate. Johann Adam Forney to him belongs this Bible, and love it, and bought it for four gulden at Wachenheim-onthe-Hart (Mountain) on the 10th of May. In the year 1713, I married my dear wife Elizabeth Louisa. On the 6th of October 1713 my first child, a son, was born at 10 o'clock at night, in the sign of the Crab, and his sponsor was the Honorable Marx Oberle. On the first of July 1715 my second child, a son, was born in the night, at four o'clock in the sign of the Virgin, and his sponsor was the Honorable Nicholas Forney of Durkheim-on-the-Hart (Mountain). January 1717, my third child, a daughter, was born dead. Apriil 24th 1718 my 4th child, a daughter, was born, and her Godmother was my step sister Maria Bertha. On the 29th of September 1724 my sixth child was born in Pennsylvania - his name Frederick (Philip) Forney. On the 16th of February 1728 my seventh child was born in Pennsylvania - her name is Clara."

More from the Book:[2]

“On Nov. 10, 1713 marx, son of Johann Adam Fornick, citizen and Tailor here, and his wife Elisabeth Louisa, was baptized. Godfather was Marx Oberle, citizen and practitioner in curing and his wife, Godmother. (The Godfather died 1714, 23 years of age).

“On July 7, 1715 Niclas, son of Johann Adam Fornick, citizen and Tailor here, and his wife Elisabeth Louisa, was baptized. Godfather: Nickl fornick, Grave-Digger at Durkheim, and his wife, Godmother.

“On April 26, 1718, Louisa Charlotte, daughter of Johann Adam Fornick, citizen and Tailor here, and his wife Louisa, was baptized. Godmothers were: the two noble Fraulein von Blarer and Geiersberg. (Compare with the Wachenheimer History Sheets, Part 1).

“Baptized on Jan. 8, 1721 was Maria Eva, daughter of Johann Adam Farnier and Elisabetha, his wife. Godmother was maria Eva, legal daughter of Matthias Hassler."

"Johann Adam Forney, a burger, lived ten miles west of Mannheim at Wachenheim-in-the-Haardt, in the Palatinate of the Rhine, in Germany.

He was settled in the neighborhood of what is now Hanover, York County, Pa., in 1734. It was then known as the "Conewago Settlements," or "Digges' Choice." The latter name it got from John Digges, who some years before had taken up some land there on a Maryland warrant' had it surveyed for him by a Maryland surveyor; and sold some of it to Forney and others, whose lives were "made miserable for years by the turmoils arising out of disputers between Digges and other settlers., which were aggravated by the conflicting claims of Penn. and Baltimore to the proprietorship. For many years the region was known as the 'disputed land,' and there naturally was uch lawlessness.".

Research notes

His grave is in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania.

Johann is one of my great-grandfathers (8th) by my great-grandmother Nettie Elizabeth Sell (Sell-1425). Uploaded his veterans burial card, and story about indian that shot him in the chest. Hope this is not to gory, but as an Army veteran I think it is important to understand what our ancestors had to overcome to make this country great, and that benefits us all.

Greetings! I can't find any substantiation of Joseph Forney as a child of Johann. The Mennonite records place his birth as after 1744. Even if he was born in 1744, Elizabeth Lowisa, Johann's only identified partner to my knowledge, would have been about 50 years old if not older. The other children listed here were born about 30 years prior to Joseph. Further, the book referenced here as a source ("The Descendants of Johann Adam Forney 1557 - 1963 by Howard G. Forney") does not list Joseph as a first generation descendant. I think he should be removed, but wanted to bring it to the attention of those who created/edited this record first. Thank you.

Fahrne-2 and Forney-302 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same person. Minimal info in the one profile. Also submitting a merge request for the one child in the other profile.

Howard Forney, the author of the book used to set the birthdates of the children, apparently translated incorrectly. Likely the original Bible entries had dates stated as day, month number and year, as was common at that time. "On the 6th of October 1713 my first child, a son, was born at 10 o'clock at night, in the sign of the Crab..." October is far from the Sun's transit through the sign of the Crab, and is instead, transiting the Scales. But if the author translated 10th day of the 6th month, corrected for the Julian Calendar on the month, but accidently wrote it as the day, the date would be June 21, 1713 (adding the correct number of days to the 10th to adjust for today's calendar), Sun was then at Summer Solstice, having just entered the Crab. I discovered, while investigating this, that our ancestor was either quite good himself, or had a very good informant. The solstice occurred at 5:10:30 pm, just hours before. Also, of note, Johann Adam was using the seasonal Tropical zodiac, not the constellations as we see them in the sky. Due to precession, when the Sun was passing through the Crab sign tropically, he was actually in the constellation of the twins. It makes sense that he would be using the tropical year though, because they started the year with the Spring Equinox, not following the Saturnalia festival as we do today.

Next, "On the first of July 1715 my second child, a son, was born in the night, at four o'clock in the sign of the Virgin.." This likely read 1st day of the 7th month, September, which would put the Sun in the belly of the Virgin, tropically, but in the constellation of the Lion. He was born September 12, 1715 by today's calendar, at 4am. Since Johann Adam didn't specify where the Sun was transiting with the other children, one would need to see his Bible entry to clarify the day and month and adjust for the new calendar style.

I thought about changing the birth dates but instead, put my thoughts here.
