Obituary

Eva Forrest Peterson, 101, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, in Garfield, Wash., at Ladow Court, her home for the last 14 months.

Eva was born Feb. 11, 1914, in North Dakota, to Frank and Helen Deitzman Forrest, the second of four children. At age 4 she moved to Anacortes, Wash., with her family. A few years later she moved to Richland, Wash., graduating from Richland High School in 1933, and she met and married John Peterson in 1940. Together they farmed, raised turkeys and kept bees, but due to the building of Hanford were forced in 1943 to give up their home at 10 cents on the dollar and moved to Kennewick. In 1950 they were again forced to move due to another governmental project, finally settling in Garfield, Wash., where they proclaimed, "Maybe we won't have to move again!"

Eva was a strong, determined and hard working woman. When John traveled with the bees he said he was going to get rid of the cows, but she said, "No, I'll learn to milk." And she did!

John and Eva raised four children, Darlene, John Jr. and Allen, all born in Kennewick, and Gene, born in Garfield.

Eva loved her family and friends, and was always thinking of others. In her 90s she drove her friends to church, doctor appointments and coffee at Ruby's. A trip to Moscow usually started with a carload of women stopping at McDonald's for pancakes and coffee, then continuing on to a day of shopping. At 100 Eva renewed her driver's license for five more years.

Her confidence and faith in the Lord Jesus saw her through many hard times. Her husband, John, passed away in 1979. By that time they had moved to town. She kept active in her church, escorted friends and was the unofficial activities director at Ladow Court. At age 98 she still had a garden, although it was much smaller. She was given plants and told to throw them out when they quit blooming, but she never did. Eva never gave up on plants or people. She was a 4-H leader for many years, a member of Grinnell Club and Garfield Christian Fellowship. She truly was God's hands and feet to many people. In recent days she told family she was going home. By the time you read this she will have heard God say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Eva is survived by her children, Darlene (Norman) Perkins and John Jr., both of Garfield, Allen (Alice) Peterson of Spokane, Wash., and Eugene (Sharon) Peterson of Renton, Wash.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In Eva's honor you may visit a shut-in, take someone to a doctor appointment or help with groceries. Gifts may also be given in her name to The Union Gospel Mission or Garfield Christian Fellowship.

Celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Garfield Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
