Biography

Margaret Hepburn's third husband.

Nisbet states that Sir John Forrester the Chancellor was succeeded by his son Archibald.[1] Balfour-Paul gives Archibald as a son of Sir Alexander Forrester of Corstorphine.

Anderson states that Archibald Forrester of Corstorphine was the son of Sir Alexander Forrester of Corstorphine and that Archibald was present in Parliament on 27th February 1469 and again on 6th July 1476.[2]

Sir Alexander Forstare [sic] of Corstorphine [sic], Knt., [a son] appears in an ecclesiastical lands charter with a salute to Archibald Forstare, Lord of Corstorphine, the latter being given as "in a state of good health". Witnesses include: Henry Forster of Niddry, John Forestar his brother [note the different surname spellings in the same charter!], Gilbert Forestar of Drilaw, Philip Forestar his son, William Forestar & David Swinton, signed at Corstorphine 20th September 1473.[3] Clearly this is Alexander, Archibald's son, not father, and the designation of Corstorphine is technically incorrect until such times as he is formally invested in his father's properties. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Forrester-1049

In early 1483 Alexander Forestare, son and heir-apparent of Archibald Forestare of Corstorphine, had the barony of Corstorphine, etc., conveyed to him, resigned by his father, but reserving a life-rent of the said castle and lands of Archibald and his wife Margaret Hepburn.[4]

The Crown confirmed a charter of Archibald Forrester of Corstorphine to his brother-german, Matthew Forrester of the lands of Barntoun in the Sheriffdom of Edinburgh, signed at Corstorphine, on 1st March 1487/8. Witnesses were James Forrester, Gilbert Forrester junior, Thomas Forrester, John Ethistoun, Patrick Hair and John Sampson.[5]

Archibald Forestar of Corstorphine was a witness to a charter to William Lowranstoun [Lauriston] dated 24th March 1486.[6] Archibald Forrester of Corstorpine was a witness to a charter to Robert Knollis of Betschelis of tenements of land in Edinburgh, signed at Edinburgh 10th November 1490.[7]

Alexander Forrester, son and heir-apparent of Archibald Forrester of Corstorphine, and Margaret Forrester spouse of said Alexander, had a feu charter of the lands of Thirlestane in Lauderdale, with the mill, which Archibald has resigned. Confirmed at Edinburgh 2nd January 1493/4.[8] (Thirlestane was a superiority of the Maitland family.)

Archibald Forestar of Corstorphine was a witness to an ecclesiastical charter dated 28th May 1498.[9]

There is no indication in original sources that Archibald was ever knighted.

Anderson states that Sir [sic] Archibald's son Sir Alexander Forrester succeeded him at Corstorphine.[10]
