Biography

Archie Fortenberry was born and raised just over the Mississippi state line in Washington Parish, Louisiana. After he married Belle Simmons, he moved to Pike County, Mississippi. Often the children in farming communities around the turn of the 20th century were needed to work on the farms which left very little time for education. However, as can be seen in the 1940 census record for Pike County, Mississippi, Archie worked as a "car carpenter" for the Steam rail road while his son, Milton, worked as a "welder".

CENSUS records often poorly transcribed

In 1910, Archie and Belle Fortenberry are living in Pike County, Mississippi and are easily found in a search of Ancestry's records. HOWEVER, in 1920 the records are FIRST poorly recorded and SECOND the person who transcribed the names were obviously NOT familiar with the names. In 1920, Archie Fortenberry (and family) is transcribed as Archie FANTINBERRY!!
