Biography

Willis was born in 1838 in Pike County, Mississippi where he lived, close to his parents, family and friends his whole life. He was the son of Calvin Fortenberry and Narcissa Simmons. He passed away in 1911. [1]

MILITARY

Willis Jackson Fortenberry served in the Confederate Army as a Private during the War of Northern Aggression. He served in the Mississippi Infantry, 7th Regiment, Company F. During his time in, one of the letters he received from home came from his uncle, Gasuaway "Gazzie" Chapman Fortenberry who had written to tell Willis about other family members, cousins and friends who had also gone to war.

Family life

Willis Jackson Fortenberry married Elizabeth Rebecca Pigott 19 December 1866. Elizabeth Pigott was the daughter of Thomas Pigott (1804 - 1866) and Martha Charlotte Fortenberry (1809 - 1846). Martha was a daughter of Isaac Fortenberry and Bethany Cordelia Magee.

Willis and Elizabeth were the parents of the following children:

  • Dula Ann Fortenberry, 6 January 1868 - 20 November 1952
  • John Warren Fortenberry, 1872 - 1930
  • Martha Lillie Isabelle Fortenberry, 10 April 1874 - 19 August 1906
  • Malinda Rebecca Fortenberry, 27 May 1876 - 22 August 1952
  • William Jackson Franklin Fortenberry, 17 Nov. 1878 - 15 Nov. 1966
  • Julia Narcissa Fortenberry, 1881 - 1911
  • Thomas Calvin Fortenberry, 23 February 1883 - 24 May 1964

Elizabeth died shortly after Thomas was born in 1883. Willis Jackson Fortenberry then married Susan E. Stogner (b. 16 Sept. 1853, d. 16 Feb. 1925), the daughter of Thomas Ezell Stogner and Safronia Bethany Faulk Stogner

  • W. Jack Fortenberry and Susan Stogner married 3 April 1884, Marion Co. Mississippi

Willis and Susan were the parents of the following children:
