Saxton Conant Foss was born in Massachusetts in 1888; he was the son of Sam Walter Foss and Carrie M. Conant. He graduated from Harvard College with the Class of 1910. After working at a number of different newspapers, Saxton enlisted in the Regular Army in 1917. He was assigned to Company F, Ninth Infantry. This unit was part of with the Allied Expeditionary Forces (AEF)., 2nd Division. Private Foss died October 9, 1918. He was buried in Belleau Wood, France.
For bravery under enemy fire, Private Foss was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Research Notes
Foss' obituary states that he wrote a number of letters to the Somerville Journal (which was perhaps his first journalism job) which were published in his hometown paper. These letters have not been searched (as of July 2021).
