Biography
Mary Augusta Foster was born about August 1845 in the Town of Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York. She was the daughter of Daniel and Sarah M. (Townsend) Foster. Her father was a Carpenter in the town of Ulysses. [1][2][3][4]
She married James R. Hurlbut, on or about September 4, 1869. The date is based on a Crystal Anniversary (15 years) party held by the Hurlbut family on that date.
Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Harlbut [Hurlbut] gave a crystal wedding party today. There were so many guests that they were obliged to set tables in the front yard. The following were some of the presents received: Cake basket and pitcher, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Townsend; glass set for sick room, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Vincent; pitcher and fruit dish, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. The first four of Mary’s children are buried in Hayt’s Cemetery in Ithaca, New York. [5]

The Hurlbut family was in Ulysses in 1880, but by 1892 was in Danby, New York, where they farmed until about 1899. [6][7] In 1900, the Hurlbut family was in Dryden, New York, but it appears they returned to Danby, or near Danby in the Town of Ithaca. [8][9][10]
In 1920, in their early seventies, James and Mary were still living in Danby, New York. Their daughter, Laura Jackson was in their household.
The death date and burial location for Mary A. Hurlbut are unknown.
