Jeptha was killed in a train accident on route to California from Maine. He was 70 years old and is buried in the Sacramento City Cemetery, Sacramento, California, as reported in the Sacramento Union newspaper, Monday, December 21, 1874.
The train accident happened near Boca, Nevada County, California, near the mouth of the Truckee River. Jeptha was taken to Dr. Nixon in Sacramento but passed away due to his injuries. It is believed he was residing in Sacramento at the time or at least planned to.
Jeptha Foster was the tenth child of Bennin and Deborah (Kinney) Foster. He was a grand-son of Susannah Hood who married Israel Kinney. Annie Hovey, who married Jeptha Foster was a granddaughter of Abigail Hood, sister of Susannah. Jeptha and his wife were second cousins, though Mrs. Stinchfield in her very fine saga of those times, states that her parents were “own cousins.” The Hoveys, Fosters, and Kinneys were all related through the Hood family
