Biography

Robert Foster, Jr. was born sometime before 1692 as he and his brother James were named executors in their father’s will in 1715. They would have probably been at least 21 years old then and Robert was likely the oldest son. [1] Robert’s parents moved from Kingston Parish in Gloucester County, Colony of Virginia, to Essex County shortly after its formation in 1692. Robert purchased 200 acres of land adjacent Mr. John Garnett and John Foster on 7 Sept 1692. The deed states that Robert was of Kingston Parish in Gloucester County. [2]

When Robert married is difficult to determine. When his father wrote his will 6 Jan 1715/16 [3] he gave to Robert the land he was already living on, so Robert may have been married by then.

Robert wrote his will 18 Dec 1719, "being sick and weak in body". The will was proved the following year in May. Robert left all of his personal estate to his wife, Ann, but made no mention of the land he had inherited from his father. [4] Because Robert had no children, the land became the property of his oldest brother. [5] On 17 May 1721 John Foster, “brother and heir at law of Robert Foster late of Essex County deced”, sold to James Bridgforth two tracts of land, 50 acres Robert Foster Sr. bought from James Ridgdaile and 100 acres that Robert Sr. bought from John Butler. [6]

Although Robert’s widow didn’t inherit any land, she did have a dower right or life estate to one third of the land Robert owned during their marriage. She sold this right to Robert’s brother John on 20 Feb 1721/2. Ann married George Pettit after the death of her husband. [7]

Foster-13473 and Foster-6693 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents

Difference in dates to be noted in the biography until a primary source can be added.

Foster-6693 and Foster-3298 are not ready to be merged because: I think that you have your Foster-3298 confused with Foster 6693 and that he should be matched up with Foster-1774 (Robert Foster Sr.) Please let me know what you think.

BTW - we are most likely cousins on some level. My mother was Juanita Foster - Daughter of Ralph Foster. Details available if you are interested.
