Biography

Samuel Fowler's ancestry is unknown. Many researchers attached him to Philip Fowler and Mary ?Winsley/Winslow, based on the will of Samuel Winsloe/Winsley who left bequests to his 'cousin' Samuel Fowler and his children, Samuel, Mary and Sarah. Although Samuel Fowler was likely related to Winslew, there has been no evidence found to support that Winsley had a sister Mary that married Philip Fowler. [1] [2]

Samuel Fowler was born in England in 1618, according to a deposition. [3]

He is styled a shipwright, and in the early practice of that trade is supposed to have visited Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In 1668, he is of Salisbury and purchased land there. More land purchases are made in 1668/9 in Salisbury and in 1673, land in Amesbury. [3]

His first wife is unknown, but is thought to have been of Portsmouth, New Hampshire where they had children. They are perhaps William and three other children named in the will of Samuel Winsley of Salisbury, dated 17 Aug., 1665; proved 9th, 2d mo., 1667 ; recorded Essex Probate, Bk. 1 : 299, who gives his estate to his cousin, Samuel Fowler's son Samuel, and his daughters Mary and Sarah. [1] [3]

He is thought to have married, second, between1673-1690, Margaret (Norman) Morgan, the widow of Robert Morgan of Beverly, after 1673, as Robert Morgan made his will October 14, 1672. In May 1690, Samuel Fowler Sr. and Margaret, sell lands from the estate of Robert Morgan in Amesbury to Samuel Weed, husband of her daughter Bethiah Morgan. Margaret is called relict of Robert Morgan and now wife of Samuel Fowler. [3] [4]

Samuel Fowler, senior, died in Salisbury, January, 1710/11. [5] [3]

Having worked on the Fowlers of Marlborough quite a lot recently, I'm setting his birth location to "England" since there is no connection with this Samuel to Marlborough. To avoid confusion, there WAS a Samuel Fowler christened there in 1624 as son of John and this was presumably the Samuel who married Alice Hunte at Marlborough in 1651, had children there through 1666 and was buried there in 1683 (and did not go to Virginia despite what another unsourced Samuel Fowler profile currently shows). All those parish records are easily found on findmypast.co.uk and possibliy other sites.

Additional research needed. Samuel Fowler is not listed in GMD. Please note bottom of p. 564, sketch of Philip Fowler where it speaks of Samuel Fowler and says "No record of Samuel Fowler is found prior to 9 April 1667, ... Salisbury." "... suggesting that the children of Samuel Fowler were born in the late 1650s and further suggesting that Samuel was born about 1630."[1]

Was he a child when migrated? migrated with whom?

Or am I understanding this wrongly?

I have been research Samuel Fowler. I believe that his first wife was Alice Hunt.

The marriage took place at the St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England on Dec. 8, 1651. I found this information on the Ancestry search engine. Below are the sources they used. I hope this helps.

Alice Hunt was born early 1614 in Charminster, Dorset, England, and died 01 January 1693 Salisbury Essex, Massachusetts

Her parents were Thomas Hunt (1596–1636) Elizabeth Parker (1601–1657)

I have not added these people to my wiki tree yet. I work and research on Ancestry.

This marriage does not seem to be for the immigrant Samuel Fowler who was already in New England at that time. Also, the mother, Elizabeth Parker, as described was on 13 when she gave birth, so married at age 12? I don't think this is correct.
Jeanie,

I do agree with you on some of the facts, but especially his mother. But I am having a hard time not thinking that Alice was his first wife. This is quite the mystery.

There is no chance that the Samuel Fowler who married Alice Hunt on 8 Dec. 1651 in Marlborough was the immigrant. It is very easy to show that Samuel and Alice of Marlborough remained there and continued having children, none of which match the New England family.

This supposed child of Philip Fowler, apparently did not exist. I will change his to son Philip, born and died in England just to recycle the profile and disconnect his marriages., remove the bio. Any objections????

There seems to be only one source, a secondary source published in 1883, that connects Samuel Fowler to Philip and Mary (Unknown) Fowler as parents. Anderson writes strongly against it in Great Migration (see source this profile).

Should Samuel Fowler stay connected to his current parents, Philip and Mary?

Can anyone find recent scholarship giving evidence of such a family connection?

If/when this gets cleaned up, the children of Samuel and first wife seem to be William, Samuel, Mary & Sarah in a will dated 1665 by Samuel Winsley, prior to marriage to Margaret after 1672 death of her husband, and should be detached from her profile and attributed to Mrs Samuel unknown. Yuck! I listed her Morgan children on her profile in the bio, but didn't add profiles.

Hi all,

Really need to do something about Samuel's wives. Appear to have duplicate Margaret Morgan's. And can something be done with "An Indian Unknown" and Mrs. Samuel Fowler?

Chris, this is the book I have been using...

In his Great Migration article about her father, Richard Norman, Robert Charles Anderson reported dau. Margaret's marriage to Robert Morgan. Anderson then added, parenthetically, "Margaret is said to have married second, after 1673, Samuel Fowler, but the evidence for this is not seen," cites Hoyt 162" (David Webster Hoyt, _The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury Massachusetts_, 162, entry for Samuel^2 Fowler.
