Private John Fowler Sr served with 1st North Carolina Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Daniel Fowler (1714-1779) and Mary Jane (Rollins) Fowler (1725-1793) were the parents of John Fowler.[1] He was born in that part of New Hanover County, North Carolina[2] that became Duplin in 1750, and later, Sampson County, specifically, Taylors Bridge.[3]
According to WikiTree informant Richard Fowler, the children of John and Elizabeth (Rackley) Fowler[1] included the following eight children. Those who are listed among his registered DAR descendants are noted with a footnote;[2] and those with a FindAGrave memorial matched to his are also noted:[1]
Sarah Margaret (Fower) Cribb[2] who married Thomas Cribb (1781-1858)[3]
Mary Anne Annie (Fowler) Sims who married William Sims[3]
Elizabeth (Fowler) Simmons (1790-1857)[2] who married Isaac Simmons (1786-1864)[3]
Lucretia (Fowler) Stephens who married a Stephens
Richard Fowler (1792-1858)[1]who married Sallie Stephens[3]
Charlotte (Fowler) Nobles who married Eli Nobles (b. ca 1794)
Amelia Ann (Fowler) Wright (1807-1869)[1][2] who married Stephen Wright (1800-1852)[3]
Additionally, the following are attached to his FindAGrave memorial, for further review:[1]
Hundly V Fowler (1806-1866)
Elizabeth Olivia (Fower) Patton (1812-1893)
R O Fowler (1817-1883)
Military Service & Later Life
According to Revolutionary War records, John Fowler was born in 1747 in Duplin (later Sampson) County, North Carolina. Different records show different ages. He enlisted as a private in the Revolutionary War in Sampson Co., North Carolina under Capt. Richard Clinton and Col. James Kenan. John was in the battle at Moores Creek Bridge in 1776. He later served under Capt. Alfred Moore and Col. Moore in the First North Carolina Regiment. He also served under Capt. William Vann. [4]

FOWLER, Daniel, Private, 1st North Carolina Continental Line
FOWLER, John, Private, Minuteman, NC Militia, 1st NC Continental Line[5][6][7] Most authors conclude that he served three tours.
After the Revolutionary War was over, John and Elizabeth moved to Lancaster County, South Carolina with Elizabeth's brothers, Elijah and Shadrack Rackley.[8]
About 1804 John sold his property in South Carolina and began purchasing property in what is now Columbus County, North Carolina.[8]
John's pension application was executed 12 Nov 1832 (Fall Term) while residing in Columbus County, North Carolina. One transcription indicates that he was aged 85 years.[9][1]
By the fall of 1837, all of the children of John Fowler had moved to Pike County, Alabama with the exception of Amelia Ann who remained with Stephen on the Wright homeplace near Iron Hill.[8]

Age & Death
Some records say he died in 1845, others 1846, but according to his pension records he was 99 in 1841 so more documentation is needed. The NASSAR and DAR agreement is off by a few days, so we have month and year certain. Note also that regarding his birth year, his pension application state that he was 85 in 1832, which is concordant with an 1747 birthdate.[1]
Burial: 1844, Near Troy, Alabama.[citation needed] as all other sources say 1845. FindAGrave states Stephens-Wright Cemetery, Sandy Plain, Columbus County, North Carolina, but this appears to be a memorial stone.
Research Notes
WIkiTree informant Richard Fowler, in a 21 Jul 2014 email, said the John Fowler who married Elizabeth Rackley didn't marry Hannah Sutton. Hannah was married to John's cousin, also a John Fowler. Therefore, Hannah Sutton is being detached as his wife (especially because she is already attached to his apparent cousin, as his wife). Note this information from Richard Fowler:
About thirty-five years ago when I submitted the DAR application for my sister...I forwarded absolute proof that the Revolutionary Patriot John Fowler, had never been married to Hannah Sutton.
I then received a communication from DAR that my research was correct, that those descendants of Hannah Sutton Fowler, and the other John Fowler, who were in DAR would not be removed, but that the future applications would be denied.
Jeremiah (b. 1761) and Micajah Rackley are also listed in the Duplin (Sampson) Co., NC Revolutionary War Service Records. Questions remain as to whether they may be related to John Fowler's wife, Elizabeth Rackley?.
Further research is needed to make sure all these John Fowlers are the same.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
From an analysis of the narrative, it looks as though the 1800 Fayetteville, Sampson County, North Carolina census record belongs to his cousin, John Fowler (abt.1730-abt.1808); whereas, the narrative here fits well with the duplicative 1800 report on John Fowler being present in the Lancaster County, South Carolina census (see discussion of report from Richard Fowler, currently Source #6).
By the way, the report on the John Fowler and Hannah Sutton family that is inferred as a subject of Richard Fowler's research to distinguish these cousins, both named John but having different vital dates and wives, would perhaps also be useful to provide more confirmation and detail for the profile on cousin John Fowler (abt.1730-abt.1808).
I found the text: Fowler, Richard Gildart. A history of the Fowler family of southeastern North Carolina. 1989. Norman, Oklahoma & Salt Lake City, Utah: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah.
Fowler-2097 and Fowler-742 do not represent the same person because: These two John Fowlers had different histories, including vital dates and wives. Some researchers have identified them as cousins.
The narrative indicates that the John Fowler who married Hannah Sutton was not the same as the John Fowler who married Elizabeth Rackley, yet here they are both attached to this one. Did we perhaps do a bad merge?
Also, I see no support for the son William. Perhaps another indication that we merged two separate John Fowlers?
I agree that confusion has arisen, but in fact two John Fowlers are attached to Hannah Sutton. Only one belongs, but the other one is not a duplicate.
The John Fowler of present appears to the be the traditional PVT John Fowler of the Am. Rev. That should be confirmed and if so, he should be 1776 stickered and categorized.
If I am reading the discussion between Hannah Sutton's profile and this one: PVT did not marry Hannah Sutton; however, Hannah Sutton DID marry a different John Fowler, who was the cousin of the PVT John Fowler, and this John Fowler who was in the Am. Rev. DID marry Elizabeth Rackley.
In Summary: confirm that this profile is Am. Rev. PVT John Fowler and annotate his profile, appropriately to signify that distinction.
Condense the discussion here into a Research Note that Hannah Sutton was married to a a different John Fowler, this John's cousin: John Fowler (abt.1730-abt.1808) - the kinship has not been directly worked out, but we'll be closer to having the arrangements by cleaning up Hannah's marriages to both cousins that didn't happen.
Update Hannah Sutton's profile to indicate which John Fowler she married (John Fowler (abt.1730-abt.1808)) and move to Research Notes that she did not also marry this profile's PVT John Fowler.
Unfortunately, I have to do some re-arrangement on the non-patriot John Fowler on FamilySearch...
With these re-alignments, I think we are well on our way to having the two lines of Fowlers to shape up, nicely.
OK, went ahead and did everything except try to hunt down the census records that should exist on FamilySearch. (Now, on to remove the incorrect spouse.)
Fowler-5084 and Fowler-742 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles look to be duplicates, same dates and locations in addition to a duplicated spouse
This profile has been identified as a duplicate by Bob Keniston, an Arborist. Please review the proposed merge - bottom of the profile on the left. If they are duplicates please approve the merge. If you have questions or would like assistance please ask. Thank you.
It would be wonderful to get the two John Fowler's merged: Fowler 742 and Fowler-1975. This ancestral line in my branch of the family is at a standstill until the process is completed. Adding more of my ancestors would mean duplicating what you already have so it would be great if you would complete the merge. Thanks. :)
Also, I see no support for the son William. Perhaps another indication that we merged two separate John Fowlers?
