Background

John Coke Fowler was born on 26 December 1815. His family derived its descent from the Fowlers of St Thomas's, in the county of Stafford, and through the grandmother of the above-named J Coke Fowler, from the Cokes of Trusley, the Wardes of Gyndale, in Yorkshire, the Fowlers of Harnage Grange, and the Fowlers of Radnorshire.

Educated

He was educated at Rugby ("under the famous Dr Arnold") and at Pembroke College, Oxford.

Barrister

In the Post Office London Directory of 1843 he was a barrister of 11 Paper Buildings, Temple [1][1]

Marriages and family

In 1844 he married 1ly Augusta Maria Bacon, 8th daughter of John Bacon "The Younger", English Sculptor, with issue two sons and one daughter. She died in 1849.

In 1850 he married 2ly Anna Evan Thomas, with issue one son and three daughters. She died in 1893.

Legal author

He wrote Collieries and Colliers, A Handbook of the Law and Leading Cases Relating Thereto, published by Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, London (1861).

Death and burial

He died "in harness" on 16 December 1899.
