Biography

Thomas (aka John) was born in 1880. He is the son of John Fowler and Vermillion Daughtry. In 1900, the family was living in Gilley's, Dale, Alabama. Thomas was married, and he and his wife, Ella, were living with his parents.[1]

By 1910, he was head of household and living in Wicksburg, Houston County, Alabama. He and Ella had 3 sons - Dawson, Harvey, and Mancel. Thomas was a farmer.[2] They were still living in Wicksburg in 1930. Their family had grown with five children still at home, including Mancel, Bessie, Herald, Herman, and Jimmie.[3]

By 1940, Thomas and Ella had moved to Geneva County, Alabama. Bessie and James were still living at home.[4]

Thomas (aka John) passed away in 1960 of Bilateral Lombar Pneumonia. He had been in the Byrce Hospital for 2.5 months prior to his death. Burial was in the Jellico Community Cemetery, Houston County, Alabama.[5]

Research Note

The granddaughter (Judith Fowler, of James Tance Fowler, brother of John "Thomas" Fowler, emailed Carolyn Martin on 7/31/2020 to state that Thomas' proper name was John Bryant Fowler. For reasons unknown to the family, John started using the first name of Thomas or Tom. His grave and death certificate use the name John Bryant Fowler.

His proper name was John Bryant Fowler; his headstone shows John B. Fowler; his obituary also gives his name as John Bryant Fowler. For reasons unknown to me, he unofficially started going by Thomas/Tom Fowler. His brother James Tance Fowler was my grandfather.
