Added by Suzan Webb What We Know About The Family Of Abraham Fox:

The earliest evidence we have, on whom we believe to be our Abraham FOX, is in the Early Kentucky Household Index records where we find him listed 29 May 1799 and 7 July 1800. He was shown again on the Tax List in Lincoln Co., KY dated 22 August 1800. Lincoln County later became Green County and then Adair Co. by 1802. In the years 1803-1807 Abraham is listed on the Adair Co., KY Tax Lists. Living near by in these records is a John FOX. The relationship between these two men is unknown until in 1808 the Tax records list that John as caring for the land of Abraham, so we know that there is probably a Father/Son relationship there. Two years later in the 1810 Adair Co., KY Census Abram is shown as head of the household with one male 10-15, one male 20-30 years old, and no females being listed. In the 1820 Adair Co., KY Census there are two Abrams and a Jacob FOX listed. One of the Abrams is listed as: 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 45, 2 females under 5, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female 26-45 years old. The other Abram household was listed as: 1 male 26-45, 2 males 45 and over, and one female 45 and over.

On 9 March 1822 Jacob FOX, the son of Abraham FOX, Sr., married Ann SANDERS in Adair Co., KY. Somewhere between that time and June of 1824 this family moved to McMinn Co., TN where their son David FOX was born. We assume that Abraham moved his family to McMinn Co., TN at this time also as the last record that can be found on Abraham FOX in Adair Co., KY is a land record dated 12 April 1821. We find Abraham again in the 1830 McMinn Co., TN Census and also in the McMinn Co., 1836 Tax Lists. We believe that he had some land in Monroe Co., TN as well as McMinn Co., TN, as there is a court record there on Abraham Fox, Sr., 24 May 1869 where title of land was divested out to his heirs. We know that Abraham died between 1836 and 1850 as we can find no more records of him until the 1850 McMinn Co., TN Census where only his wife Elizabeth is listed in the Census.

When and where Abraham was exactly born or died is still a mystery. There are still lots of trails to be tracked in our Fox hunt!

Shelley Broyles, Abraham Fox Sr., Committee Chairman

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abraham by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abraham:

The Abraham Fox that you mention marrying Elizabeth Goodman is my 5th great grandfather who was born circa 1814, likely Smyth County, Virginia. He is not the same Abraham Fox mentioned above. He is a brother to Aquilla Fox, and their fathre was Adam Fox and Barbara Steffey. Abraham moved his family to Claiborne County sometime after between 1850-1860. Deed records show that he may have had dealings in Claiborne County as early as 1830, and other deeds show him making land transactions in 1855 and 1856. He is listed in the 1838 Smyth County Tax lists with his brother Aquilla and father Adam.

Note: Elizabeth Painter may be Nancy Elizabeth Painter Cole who is listed on Findagrave, being born on 22 November 1854 and died on 6 August 1878 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She is listed as the wife of Josiah Cole (17 December 1844-19 August 1928) who served as a private, Battery C, 1st Tennessee Light Artillery. They both are buried at the Davis-Cole Cemetery at Sandlick, Claiborne County, Tennessee.

Note: I contacted Dianne Major at Findagrave on 3 January 2022. She states that Nancy Elizabeth Painter Cole is her 2nd great grandmother.

The Abraham Fox that married Elizabeth Goodman in Smyth co. Va. in 1832 was not Abraham Fox, father of Anderson, Nancy, Jacob, Abraham jr. [ Abe Jr married Mary Caroline Dickey ] and others. The Abraham Fox that married Elizabeth was born in1814. They moved to Claiborne co. Tenn. Had a daughter named Margret.
