Biography

This Samuel Fox, born 1681,[1], is "the Elder" of two half-brothers, both of whom married and had families. The nicknames arose in their own time, were used by their father in his will, and remain useful.

Marriages

First marriage was to Margaret Stebbins (not always spelled that way)[2], and all the children result from that union.

Margaret died 4 Oct 1752

Second marriage, late in life, was to Zipporah, daughter of John Bolles, on 27 April 1753, [3] [4]

Samuel Fox the Elder and Margaret Stebbins Fox had, in Montville:[4], [3], [5]

  • Samuel, c. 1707, m. Abigail Harris 12 Nov 1729
  • Bathshoa, m. Robert Chapman in 1726
  • Margaret, b. 21 Apr 1709, m. Nathaniel Comstock in 1728
  • Elizabeth (Fox), m. Isaac Avery
  • Content,
  • Amy, m. Abner Avery in 1740
  • Caron, m. John Allen 24 Feb 1742-3
  • Ezekiel, b. 1721, m. Mehitabel Lamson of Boston in 1746
  • Susanna, m. Alexander Johnston in 1738
  • Esther, m. Robert Johnston

Notes

This profile formerly was linked to a putative spouse named Margaret Brintnal. William F. Fox[3] calls that attribution 'a manifest error' made by (long-time Town Clerk) Henry Augustus Baker.[5]. In view of no supporting evidence of spousal relationship (or even the existence of such Margaret Brintnal), the link has been removed.

Death

Samuel Fox the Elder died in 1754 in Montville, where he was buried. He made his will in 1753, naming Daniel Coit and Nathaniel Comstock as executors.[4] The will mentioned (second) wife, Zipporah; children, Bathshua, Margaret, Content, Amy, Caron, Ezekiel, and Samuel, but did not mention the names of the husbands of his daughters.
