Biography

Oscar Joe Fox^[1] was born on November 14, 1879 in Duvalls Bluff^[2], Prairie County, Arkansas. He was the son of Charles Stearns Fox and Sarah Weimer. Sometime after 1880^[3] and before 1900^[4] he moved to Ellis County Texas where he boarded with the Elisha Perry family. His brother John Fox boarded next door with William Baldridge. Charles' mother, Sarah, his brother, Charles A, and his sister, Katherine, were also living in Ellis County by 1900^[5]. Katherine's death certificate implies that at least she came to Ellis County about 1884. The earliest documented arrival of brother, Walter in Ellis County is 1920 when the census shows that he is living with their brother, Charles.^[6] Oscar was 30 years old, single and living in Hennessy, Oklahoma when on December 30 1909 the local newspaper reported that he had just left for Wyoming^[7]. The 1910 Census confirmed that he was working on a ranch in Eden Valley, Wyoming the next summer.^[8] Local newspaper social references to Oscar show that he was back in Hennessy about a year later. He married Edith McKissick on November 3, 1912 in Hennessy.^[9] He remained in Hennessy until after his second child, Beverly, was born in August 1918 and then the family moved a little east to Madison, Washington, Oklahoma.^[10] He passed away on November 16, 1960 in Collinsville, Rogers County, Oklahoma^[11].

1. ↑ Most records refer to Oscar as either Oscar J Fox or just Oscar Fox. However his birth cert, draft card, and marriage record show Oscar Joe Fox.
2. ↑ There is some confusion over the exact name of De Valls Bluff. The place was settled by C. S. Du Vall in the 1850's and Oscar Joe's Birth Certificate shows Duvalls Bluff. However later records including census's say De Valls Bluff or Devalls Bluff.
