Biography

Thomas was born at Havering Palace, Havering-atte-Bower, Essex. 14 Feb. 1591/2 the son of Samuel Foxe and Ann Leveson.

He matriculated from Magdalen Hall, Oxford, 19 June 1607; was demy of Magdalen College 1608-13, and fellow 1613-30, proceeding B.A. 1611 and" M.A. 1614.

On the 2nd November, 1615, he was allowed to divert to medicine, being one of the six Magdalen college fellows who are allowed to go out in law or physic. [1]

He became bursar of his college in 1622, and junior proctor of the university 1620-1. He afterwards studied medicine, proceeding M.D. at Oxford, and was 25th June, 1623 a candidate of the London College of Physicians.

19 June 1631 Thomas Fox married Ann, daughter of Richard Honeywood of Charing, Kent, and Marleshall, Essex, and granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Honeywood, the friend of his grandfather John Foxe[2]

Together they had a daughter Alice, who married Sir Richard Willys, bart. They lived at Warlies a country house in Essex which he expanded in1629.

He died at Warlies 20 Nov. 1662, and was buried in Waltham Abbey on 26 Nov.

Disputed relations

Thomas is sometimes shown to be the father of Thomas Fox of Concord and Thomasine/Tamzin the wife of Moses Wheat of Concord. The documented history of Thomas Fox, MD clearly disputes this.

Research notes

Leads worth pursuing:

1548, May 26, my dear wife Ann Honywood (her maiden name and bom at Pett near Charing in Kent on Nov. 26, 1588) died at my cousin Ursula Warner her house in Bromley, whose body at ye time of ye rising in Kent, was carried to Charing and there buried.--Diary of Dr. Thomas Foxe, Royal Historical Society's Transactions, 1877, vol. v. p. 58

John Fox b1645 also in Charing, son of Thomas is likely to be a son[3]

Very young parents. Mom 12-13, dad 14. Any thoughts or further verification?
Charlene, I'm reviewing the sources on the son's profile, it looks like the clues to his origins are in Southwark. But I'd like to read more and then probably propose disconnecting from these parents.

Thank you M Cole.

While you are at it, the data for his wife Ann is very conflicting. For example, they have her dying a year before marriage, Christened only nine years beforeI her son Thomas is born, etc. Perhaps she is the wife of a very different Thomas Fox. Thank you so much, Char

Fox-11622 and Fox-6190 appear to represent the same person because: identical dates and spouse
