In the 1871 census he was a manufacturer of woollen felts living on Hanover St. Batley employing 19 men 14 women and 2 boys.

In the 1881 census he was a woollen manufacturer employing 60 men living at Grosvenor House Grosvenor Rd Batley. He employed 2 domestic servants Harriet M Jordan aged 19 and Elizabeth Wright aged 18.

In the 1891 census he was a wool and felt manufacturer living at "Grosvenor House" Batley Yorkshire

In the 1901 census (31 March 1901) he was a woollen manufacturer living on Grosvenor Rd Batley Yorkshire employing 2 servants, Sarah Bramham aged 17 and Laura Megson aged 15.

In the 1911 census he was a woollen cloth and felt manufacturer living in Batley. 6 of his 10 children were dead at this time. He had 1 servant Florence Greenwood aged 23.
