Biography

Jonas was born in Pennsylvania in 1817. His father's name was also Jonas Fox. (See Note 3) Jonas married Christiana Lantz in Pennsylvania. Based on the birth of their first child, Hiram, they were probably married in 1842 or 1843, most likely in Northumberland County. They had six children in Pennsylvania before relocating to Michigan, sometime between 1857 and 1860. The family first settled in St. Joseph County and relocated to Prairie Ronde Township in Kalamazoo County prior to 1870. Christiana died in 1892 and Jonas followed her in 1894. They are buried together in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Prairie Ronde Township.

1. Date of Death: The Genealogical Death Indexing System record cited below has the date of death 5-Dec-1894, however the gravestone has the date 15-Dec-1894. Neither is a primary record, since the former is a transcription from an earlier record and the later is based on what the person who ordered the stone to be made told the mason. This profile assumes that the gravestone is more likely to be correct and that the discrepancy is due to a typographic error on the Index.
2. Date of Birth: The date of birth is calculated from the date of death and Jonas' age as given on the gravestone: 77 yrs 6 mo, 7 D on 15 Dec 1894. This gives a DoB of 8 June 1817. Find a Grave erroneously gives a date of 6 Aug 1817, which was probably due to mixing up the month and day : 6-8-1817 instead of 8-6-1817. Of course, if the date of death on the gravestone is wrong, then the calculated date of birth will also be wrong.
3. Father's Name: The Genealogical Death Indexing System record gives the name of Jonas Fox to be Jonas Fox.
