Biography by David W. Benedict:

There is some confusion regarding Elizabeth Frouk, the wife of Jeremiah Stuart Power. Many online references show that her surname was "Frank" rather than Frouk.

A certified copy of the marriage record was returned to me on June 30, 2006. The Greene county clerk's office quite clearly transcribes the bride's surname as "Frouk," but many researchers use the name "Frank." From my own reading of the handwritten record, it would conceivably be possible for the name to be "Frank" rather than "Frouk."*

An online transcription of grave markers from the Claypool-Jones Township Cemetary shows the death of Elizabeth Power, that she was born in Greene County, Illinois, and that her parents were Peter and Mary "Frank." The question then arises as to why those responsible for the burial of Elizabeth-- including her husband J. S., who lived nearly 30 more years-- would have shown her parents to be named "Frank" if her name was "Frouk." She certainly would have known and correctly shared her own maiden name.

Two possible scenarios: 1. Elizabeth was originally named Frouk and deliberately changed the name to Frank. 2. Greene County officials mis-transcribed the handwritten name. That's my best guess as to what happened.

The puzzle calls for more research on the names of Peter and Mary Frank (or Frouk) in Greene County Illinois. DWB 09-10-06

Addendum: I had hoped that acquiring the death record of Mary Power, the daughter of Elizabeth, would shed more light on the Frank/Frouk question. Unfortunately it didn't. Mary's mother's name was not included on the certificate, so the mystery remains. DWB 11-26-2012
