born near Stratherrick, Invernessshire, about 1606, said to be a cadet of the family of Lovat through the family of Tober ; educated at Univ. of St Andrews ; M.A. (1629); pres. by John, Bishop of the Isles, 1st March, and inst. (at Sorobie) 28th July 1633; became preacher in Sir Lachlan MacLean’s Regiment in 1645 under Montrose, for which he was debarred from his charge and stipend and plundered by Campbell of Ardnamurchan. In 1662 he had a grant from vacant stipends ; died 14th Feb. 1680. He was the first minister who constantly preached here and was very diligent among his people, not only in matters of faith and religion but in secular subjects also. It is said that at his coming only three persons (all MacLeans) could write their names. He marr. Janet, daugh. of Lachlan MacLean of Coll, and had issue John, his successor in the charge. [1]
