Biography

Margaret (Fraser) de Hay is a member of Clan Fraser.
The Birth Date is a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Birth

Margaret was the daughter of Simon Fraser by his wife Maria of unknown parentage. This marriage produced two daughters,[1] including Joanna (possibly) who married into the Fleming family of Wigton.[2][3] Margaret's date of birth has been roughly estimated based upon the estimated birthdate of her father, Simon Fraser, who swore fealty to Edward I in 1291.[1] Assuming Simon had reached his majority at this time, the assumption is that he was born before 1270. Margaret's birthdate, therefore, would likely have occurred around 1291.

Marriage

In 1308, Margaret Fraser married Sir Gilbert of Tweeddale and Locherworth, son of Sir William Hay of Tweeddale and grandson of Sir John of Locherworth.[2][4][5] Their marriage produced the following issue:[5]

  • Thomas, who succeeded his father to the lands of Tweeddale (d. c. 1350). He married Christiana Wardlaw, daughter of the laird of Torreburne in Fife and sister of the Cardinal of Glasgow;
  • Malitius, who died at the battle of Poitiers in France;
  • James, who died at the battle of Poitiers in France;
  • Marjory, married to Alexander Montgomery; and
  • Agnes, married to John Fenton, councilor.

Death

Margaret's date of death and location of burial are unknown.

Research Notes

Margaret Fraser was not married to Sir Gilbert of Errol, as her profile previously indicated, and has been detached as his wife (see sources above).

Only the last child is connected to the 'spouse' of this profile Gilbert (Hay) de Haya Vth Laird of Errol (bef.1275-1333). The others are connected to Gilbert (Hay) de Haya IIIrd Laird of Errol (bef.1212-abt.1263) as their father. He is married to Idonea (Comyn) Haye (bef.1221-aft.1250)
So many Hay's! All of the children are correct though Gilbert Hay-3116 is not her spouse (he is the Gilbert of Errol). Margaret (sometimes Mary) was the daughter of Simon Fraser as noted on this profile. I can't find a profile for Gilbert of Locherwart though his father would be William Hay-475. Seems many of the sources use different names for the Hays though here are some sources:

Hi

Gilbert Hay was merged with his grandfather, I have created a new profile for the Gilbert who was the husband of Mary/Margaret, so I'm editing her spouse so she's married to the correct man.
