Biography

William Fraser was born April 15, 1776,[citation needed] the first child born at the Middle River of Pictou to the Hector settlers,[1] the son of Alexander Fraser and Marion Campbell.

In a deed dated December 14, 1800, Alexander Fraser, senior, of the Middle River deeded to "his son" William Fraser his 100 acres on the east side of the Middle River.[2]

William married Eleanor Archibald[3] on January 17, 1801.[citation needed] They had:

  1. Alexander Miller[4]
  2. David A[4]
  3. Simon McLean (third son)[4]
  4. Samuel William (youngest son)[4]
  5. Marion[4]
  6. Jane (second daughter)[4]
  7. Catherine[4]
  8. Sarah[4]
  9. Mary[4]
  10. Margaret (sixth daughter)[4]
  11. Isabella[4]
  12. Nancy[4]
  13. Martha[4]

Eleanor, daughter of David Archibald, and her husband William Fraser were mentioned in David's probate proceedings in 1820.[3]

William made his will February 10, 1848. It in he mentions his wife Eleanor (he left her the land at Salmon River, Colchester, that he received from David Archibald), his youngest son Samuel William (he left him his home farm fronting the Middle River), his sons Alexander Miller Fraser, David A Fraser, his third son Simon McLean Fraser, his daughter Marion, his second daughter Jane, his sixth daughter Margaret, his daughters Catherine and Sarah, and his unmarried daughters Mary, Isabella, Nancy, and Martha. He appointed his wife Eleanor, his son Samuel William Fraser, and Alexander Fraser, esquire, to be executors.[4]

William died February 14, 1848, probably at his home at the Middle River. He is buried in Alma Cemetery. The inscription on his gravestone reads:[5]

In Memory
OF
WILLIAM FRASER
DIED
Feb. 14th. 1848.
Aged 73 years

His will was proved by April 17, 1849.[4]

Research Notes

Previously this profile claimed that William was born in Scotland, however this is wrong. Following the land records of William's farm shows that he was the William Fraser, son of Alexander Fraser, and first child born to the settlers at Middle River.

Alexander Fraser, in his crown land grant of 1783 received 100 acres near the mouth of the Middle River, on the east side.[6] Alexander Fraser, senior, of the Middle River deeded this land to William Fraser "his son" in 1800,[2] and no further record of William deeding this land away can be found. In William's 1848 will, he gives to his son Samuel William Fraser "all my farm fronting on the Middle River".[4] In the Illustrated Historical Atlas of Pictou,[7] Samuel William Fraser is shown to own this same 100 acre lot from Alexander's origianl 1783 grant.
