Biography

Margaret was born about 1847. She is the daughter of Isaac Freeland and Hannah Coltrane Freeland.

OBITUARY - Margaret FREELAND, age 3, is listed on the 1850 census with her parents Isaac FREELAND (Jr) and first wife Hannah A. COLTRANE (see below). Margaret is the granddaughter of Revolutionary soldier Isaac Freeland (Sr) who served under General George Washington, including training during the winter at Valley Forge, and served the duration of that war. Isaac befriended his Sgt Howell ELDREDGE for whom he later named a son Howell Eldredge FREELAND. For his military service, Isaac was granted Bounty Land located in Ohio, though Isaac never went to Ohio, but rather settled with his family in North Georgia. Isaac again served in the military during the War of 1812 against the British. In 1818 Isaac died in Franklin County, Georgia that part that later became Habersham County.

Margaret's mother, Hannah died in 1852 probably following the birth to twins Hannah and William "Brant".

Margaret's father "Isaac was tried and convicted of murder, he was hanged April 15, 1859 in Forsyth County, Georgia- known as the Wildcat Murders in 1859." (Though the Sheriff had been drinking with the group of men and took off to Texas, possibly planting Isaac's hair comb with the victim.)
