Biography

Samuel Freeman was born August 8, 1715, the son of Thomas Freeman and Mary Smith of Harwich, Barnstable Count, Massachusetts[1]

Circa 1735 he married Margaret Smith[2], and had children, including:

  1. Samuel Freeman Jr born April 9, 1736 in Harwich, who married Mercy Snow of Harwich December 16, 1756[3]
  2. Bathsheba Freeman, born May 30, 1738[4], who married Eliakim Higgins of Orleans Massachusetts on Dec. 16, 1756, and who died in 1799
  3. Captain Hezekiah Freeman, born September 3, 1740, in Harwhich, who married Martha and died in 1816[5]
  4. Smith Freeman, born June 3, 1743 and lived in Boston in 1773[6]
  5. Joseph Freeman, born Nov. 5, 1745, in Harwich ; m. Rebecca Nickerson of Harwich, and died in 1786)
  6. Keziah Freeman (Abt 1746-1817), who married Prince Higgins of Eastham on Jan. 16, 1766, and whose descendants are in Orrington, Maine
  7. Josiah Freeman, born Feb. 20, 1754, in Harwich, who married Sarah Bee of Liverpool, and 2d Mary Cobb, and who died in 1840

Samuel's wife Magaret died circa 1755.

On 27 Oct 1755 he married Mary Mayo, daughter of Judah Mayo and Mary Hamilton, and widow of Joseph Doane in Newport, Rhode Island[7], and they had children, including:

  1. Doane Freeman, born Aug. 14, 1757 in Harwich, who died in 1779
  2. Seth Freeman, born Jan. 8, 1758, who died in Liverpool in 1859
  3. Benjamin Freeman, born April 13, 1759, in Bristol, Maine, who married Elizabeth Nickerson, born July 7, 1782
  4. Margaret Freeman, born May 19, 1761, in Liverpool, N.S.
  5. Sarah Freeman, born March 20, 1763 in Liverpool
  6. Lydia Freeman, born Nov. 20, 1764 in Liverpool
  7. Captain James Freeman, born Sept. 24, 1767, in Liverpool, who married Hannah Barss, on Dec. 11, 1792, in Liverpool.

Samuel Freeman moved to Liverpool, Nova Scotia about 1760, and in deeds and other documents there was styled " Esq.," as a magistrate or provost marshal, as early as Oct. 26, 1773.[8] [9] [10]

He died 4 Apr 1783 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia[11]
