Biography

George Washington Freeman was born about 1854 in North Carolina; he was the son of John Freeman and Rachel Silver (or Rachel Bennett)[needs confirmation]. [1]

In 1860,[1] George W. Freeman (age 6, born North Carolina) was living in Yancey County, North Carolina in the household of his father, John Freeman (age 37, born North Carolina), with his mother, Rachael M. Freeman (age 37, born North Carolina), and this Freeman siblings, born North Carolina (age, sex): i) Rebecca (16, F), ii) William L. (14, M), iii) Benoni (12, M), iv) Robert P. (11, M), v) Sarah E. (8, F), vi) Harriett E. (5, F), vii) Dicey (3, F). John's occupation was a farmer. Of note, on the prior enumeration sheet for the 1860 federal census,[1] was the family of James & Nancy Johnson, with their daughter, Susan Ellen Johnson, whom George would later marry. Hence, George and Susan Ellen grew up living near to one another.

In 1870,[2] George W. Freeman (age 15, born North Carolina) was living in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina in the household of his father, John Freeman (age 52, born North Carolina), with his mother, Rachel Freeman (age 42, born North Carolina), and his Freeman siblings, born North Carolina (age, sex): i) Rebecca (24, F), ii) Dica C. (13, F), iii) Martha (10, F). John's occupation was a farmer.

On 11 Aug 1877 in Mitchell County, North Carolina,[3] G. W. Freeman married Ellen Johnson. G. W. was the son of John & Rachel Freeman. Ellen was the daughter of James & Nancy Johnson.

In 1880,[4] George Freeman (age 21 [sic], born North Carolina) was living in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina as head of household with his wife, Ellen Freeman (age 20, born North Carolina), with their daughter, Nancy Freeman (age 2, born North Carolina). George's occupation was a farmer; he could not read nor write. Of note, on the same census enumeration sheet,[4] the next family listed was that of his parents, J. V. & Rachel Freeman

On 25 Jun 1887 in Spruce Pines, Mitchell County, North Carolina,[5] Ellen Johnson, wife of George Freeman, gave birth to a daughter, Matilda Freeman.

On 1 Jun 1900,[6] George Freeman (age 52, born Aug 1847 in North Carolina) was living in Grassy Creek Township, Mitchell County, North Carolina as head of household with his wife of 22 years, Ellen Freeman (age 38, born Mar 1862 in North Carolina), and their Freeman children, born North Carolina (age, sex): i) Eliza J. (19, F, born Sep 1880), ii) Wilham (14, M, born May 1886), iii) Luhannah (11, F, born Feb 1889), iv) John (6, M, born Feb 1894), v) James T. (2, M, born Jun 1897), vi) Panthy (3/12, F, born Feb 1900). Ellen had born 6 children, all of whom were currently living. George's occupation was a farmer; he could not read or write. [See Research Notes below for discussion of some ambiguities for the 1900 census record.]

On 8 Feb 1904 in Pineloa, Avery County, North Carolina,[7] Ellen Johnson, wife of George Freeman, gave birth to a son, Virgil Herbert Freeman.

In 1910,[8] George W. Freeman (age 56, born North Carolina) was living in Wilsons Creek Township, Caldwell County, North Carolina as head of household with his wife, Ellen Freeman (age 48, born North Carolina), and their Freeman children, born in North Carolina (age, sex): i) John (14, M), ii) Tinsley (13, M), iii) Pantha (9, F), iv) Virgil (6, M). George and Ellen had been married for 30 years; Ellen had born 6 children, 4 of whom were currently living. Ellen could nor read nor write. George's occupation was a farmer.

Research Notes

  • 1900 federal census[6] - the information in this record is mostly, but not entirely, consistent with other relevant records. It is unclear whether the ambiguities were simply errors in the census recording and/or that George & Ellen were illiterate. For example, the 1900 census reported that Ellen had born 6 children and all were living. However, in 1887, her daughter, Matilda was born; but the 1900 enumeration lists a daughter named "Lubanah" born May 1886. It is possible that "Lubanah" was really "Matilda" who was born on 25 Jun 1887; but this is a bit of a stretch.
  • Possible death & burial - George W. Freeman died in 1912 and he was buried in the Pineola Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Pineola, Avery County, North Carolina.[9]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
