Research Notes

  • Both birth and death locations and dates are marked uncertain. Further research is needed.
  • Birth field gave Newport as place of birth and bio gives England, without a good source. According to Wikipedia, Newport was founded in 1639 which is 11 years before her birth. Changed birth to England since that seems more likely.
  • This profile does not currently have any primary or secondary sources, other than some secondary sources for the births of her children. A search of ancestry and familysearch and the various cited online family trees did not show any additional sources. Kolze-7 22:48, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

There are two possibilities for Elizabeth. Her stated name was Freeman (father probably not Simon, no evidence his daughter Elizabeth came to America and while his son Ralph did he had no connections to any of these families). She has a connection to the Elizabeth (married John Ellis) daughter of Edmund Freeman by his 1st wife. Elizabeth Wooley's son in-law Judah Allen was the nephew of Rose Allen Holloway who in 1644 testified against John and Elizabeth for fornication before marriage for which he was publicly whipped. Edmund's 2nd wife was Elizabeth_ , who are only known to have a daughter Mary b.1636. Edmund only mentions Elizabeth Ellis in his will but he doesn't mention all his children and only one daughter Elizabeth is mentioned on the 1635 ship's manifest. Edmund's brother William had a daughter Elizabeth bpt. Oct.30., 1629 about whom nothing is known, William didn't come to America but his daughter could have. Why would Elizabeth's daughter marry the nephew of the woman responsible for her uncle in-law's punishment (and son Edward married Rose's niece)? Perhaps because Judah wasn't actually George Allen's son. His parents were Rose's ex-husband Joseph Holloway d.1664 (a 1646 inventory had to do with their divorce) and George's wife Hannah_ (check out the YDNA on Wikitree). Rose must have had intimate knowledge of Elizabeth and John Ellis, maybe Hannah's name was Ellis and she and Joseph were out for revenge sex. The other possibility is Freeman was her father's title (the usage was common enough) and she was the daughter of Bartholomew Lippincott who married Elizabeth Squire in 1636 (both from Devon), d.1665 L.I., N.Y. He was the uncle of Richard Lippincott whose son Jacob married Emmanuel and Elizabeth's daughter Grace. They had only one recorded child b.1637, d.1631, a daughter Elizabeth could not be born before 1638. Emmanuel was in R.I. while she would be in N.Y. and possibly pregnant. He was b.1625, how would they hook up? Maybe the Quakers needed to find Elizabeth a husband as they did for her granddaughter Elizabeth Allen who was married as the "WIdow Lee" at 16, last name of her 1st child's father. It could be Elizabeth Wooley's 1st child's (born before she married Emmanuel) father's name was Freeman, perhaps Edmund's brother John said to have died 1648 because his wife remarried in 1649 but there are suggestions he died 1666 in which case he was divorced. Divorce in Puritan colonies was not rare (1st was in 1639), same for Quakers but there remarriage was a tricky issue. Nor did it necessarily involve the courts, being restricted to those who could afford it. Abandonment was grounds to invalid marriage and wouldn't involve a property inventory. Elizabeth Allen's daughter in-law Sarah Lee Maple's uncle in-law was Thomas Squire, g grandson of William Squire of Devon, likely relative of Elizabeth daughter of Christopher Squire also of Devon. Richard signing his will was witnessed by Judah Allen. Illegitimacy was hardly unknown for the Lippincott, Richard's daughter Increase never married her "husband". Same for the Freeman, Mary's husband was fined for a "disorderly" marriage, they weren't married. Richard Lippincott returned to England about 8 months before Elizabeth's first child was born, perhaps he was afraid of being whipped. When he returned 10 years later it wasn't to Ma. where the Freeman lived but to R.I. where Elizabeth's family lived and he followed them to N.J.

Freeman-4391 and Unknown-295971 appear to represent the same person because: Looks like these two family branches need to be merged.
