Biography
Joel Terrell Freeman[1] was born on July 27, 1812, in Rutherford, North Carolina[2], the child of Rob Freeman and Catherine Seward. He married Isabel Minerva Porter on September 16, 1834. He died on August 29, 1889, in Gerton, North Carolina, and was buried in Henderson, North Carolina[3].

Joel and Isobella are shown in the 1860 Federal Census of Edneyville Township,
Henderson County, N. C. According to the 1845 Henderson County Court
records, Joel was in charge of overseeing Hickorynut Road from the
Henderson line to the Buncombe line beginning at the Buncombe line near
Turkey Knob Gap, then with a leading ridge opposite Widow Morrison's
then a direct line to the bridge on Broad River at the mouth of Reedy
Patch Creek, then north to the McDowell line, then with said line to
Buncombe line.[4]
