MRS ESTHER LEWIS.
An old and highly respected resi- dent of Jackson's Creek passed away on Friday last in the death of Mrs Esther Lewis, wife of Mr Thomas Lewis, her demise causing much regret amongst her many friends residing in the district. Deceased, who was 78 years of age, had an attack of bronchitis, and was confined to her room for some time. Latterly her health became worse, and she passed away as above stated on Tuesday morning, the cause of death being senile decay. The late Mrs Lewis was a native of County Kanan, Ireland, and went to America with her parents when an infant. She arrived in Australia in the year 1857, shortly after- wards coming to Ararat. She was married to Mr Lewis in 1861, and after the marriage Mr and Mrs Lewis went to reside at Jackson's Creek, where she lived continuously up till the time of her death. Deceased leaves a widower and a family of one son (Mr Thomas Lewis, of Jackson's Creek) and two daughters. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, when the re- mains were interred in the Ararat cemetery. The funeral service was read by the Rev. J. J. Spalding, and the coffin-bearers were Messrs G. Hinchliffe, C. Hinchliffe, W. Phillips and W. Spiers. Mr J. Dunn carried out the funeral arrangements.

OBITUAR Y. MRS ESTHER LEWIS. Many old residents of Ararat and, district will learn with deep regret of the death of Mrs Esther Lewis, wife of Mr Thomas Lewis, of Jackson's Creek, which sad event occurred at her late residence on Tuesday morning last. The deceased, who had reached the age of seventy-eight years, passed away from senile decay. Some time ago she was attacked with bronchitis. Al- though she was able to get about after being confined to her room for some time, she never properly recovered, and her health failing her, she gradu- ally grew worse, and died as above stated. The deceased was a native of County Kavan, Ireland, and when an infant she went with her parents to America. She came out to Australia in the year 1857, and shortly after came to Ararat at the time the gold rush was on. She was married to Mr Thomas Lewis in 1861, and on their marriage both Mr and Mrs Lewis went to reside at Jackson's Creek, where they have continued to live up till the present time. The deceased leaves to mourn their loss a devoted husband and family of one son (Mr. Thomas Lewis, of Jackson's Creek), and two daughters. The funeral is announced to take place to-morrow afternoon, when the remains will be interred in the Ararat Cemnietery.

Obituary mentioning a son Thomas appears to be an error, possibly a confusion with her husband, as her son's name was William Henry Stafford.
